I'm looking at a 2g Eclipse, turbo for 1k. It's super clean inside and out, new tires, pretty nice tire's. Problem is the guy says it needs an ecu, and he bought one for it, but aparently it need's to be flashed to the car, computer codes need to match. Makes sense so far, but then he said he bought a used ecm for it, and the local shop wouldn't flash it because it was used :dunno:

So like an online shop shouldn't care if it's used or not right? Or do I need to get the correct one? And where should I look for one?

Any info at all would be great, because I'll have like 1400 bucks to get this together and going.

The 2g's looked the best but the 1g had a stronger motor. As far as the ECU :dunno: Try ebay and craigslist. I don't know why they wouldn't flash a used one.

i don't either, they had him buy a new one from them, then it was "stolen" lol. I have no idea if it's the truth or not.

its a non turbo. there are soooo many things that could be wrong with it.

try www.dsmtalk.com
www.dsmtuners.com

they could help you on the flash issue. I wonder what happened to the ECU though? The 1gs are notorious for the caps leaking inside and burning them up, I havent heard that in the 2gs though.

Ha ha ha, that's where I'm at now, lol. It would seem the crank sensor may be bad as well, it's pretty damn far away from me, so i can't exactly run out there everyday and play with it. For 1k, do you think I should bite, go out there, check for spark and fuel, and report back?

Trust me man. It sounds like a good deal, but those things can be quite stressful to own. Im very happy I went with a mustang over another one of those. However, they can be good cars. The ECU is nothing to mess around with though. Try the websites Dave posted. They are VERY helpful. I was on both of them for a while.

+1 to that. I never owned one but I know that to be 100% true. :coolsmiley:

Well it has a claimed 60k on the motor, and a for sure 205k on the body, so... I'm going to head out there tomarrow, pull the upper timing cover, check the belt isn't busted, and if not, then I'll buy it.

it is an interference engine, if the belt is busted, you will know it...lol

1k is a good price for the body alone if it is in good shape.

THat's pretty much what I'm counting on, lol.

I've also found that I'm surrounded by some pretty esteemed DSM shop's like Mentor Mitsubishu (for parts), and Buschur Racing (for tech). SO i shouldn't have any difficulty getting going. I'm gonna laugh if I get out there with my tools, votlmeter, compression gauge, FP gauge, and it's something easy, then I'll throw the money at him and run away :hammer:

I get the feeling from the guy that no matter what is wrong witha fuel injected car, it will always be "that damned elctronic brain thingamabob".

I've been reading for about 7 and a half hours, conculted with some DSM expert's, and have come to the conclusion that the ECM is fine, unless he fried it himself. And ECM's are not married to the car, any 2g ECM should work, although they changed the firing order in 97. According to my research this points to a few thing's depending on it's behavior.

Could be a couple relays under the dash, one for fuel, one for the ECU, 10 bucks at Radioshack.

Could be as easy as the clutch interlock switch, unplug and it will work.

Could be either the cam or crank sensors

loose/bad grounds.

I've also learned that DSM guy's are hard headed and can't grasp the fact that those little car's are just transportation to some people (like me), not race car's :wall: :hammer:

But, :TY: for the help guy's, definately got me on the right path here.

Im one of those hard heads...lol I love dsms. They arent the most reliable, but man they can be fast cheap! I sold my last one when I bought my Sti. At one point I had a 91 Talon Tsi awd, an srt-4, and an STi sitting in my driveway..lol

After having several friends own DSM's, I would never own one. My one friend had a Talon TSi that was built with the best of the best and put down ~480hp to the wheels on moderate boost...that car ran a maximum of 2-3 weeks at a time before something else would go wrong. So that car was pretty modified, I know. Another friend bought a mint 20k mile 3000GT VR4, beautiful car with a nice dose of factory power, but that car also had nothing but problems and he kept it less than 6 months. Those are the only 2 worth mentioning, but overall DSM's are known for having problems, so I would stay away from them.
