spare tire well

im just cleaning up my trunk to do a clean battery box install, and i was looking in the tire well and there seems to be a big rubber patch where the spare tire sits, does anyone know what this is? ive started chipping away at it and its really brittle and crumbles off.

Are you talking about toward the back? I have a soft spot that im sure is a factory hole in the trunk that they covered. Take a pic of it.

probably noise reduction or to keep it from vibrating (uneducated guess)

its a mastic patch, its there so when the tire is set down it doesnt rub the paint off and cause premature rust.

i need to weld my bottle there.

be aware that the gas tank is directly under that spot. IT is a noise reduction crap that would need to be scrapped/burned off to weld.
