Well, after tearing into the dash and finding the speedo gear totally intact (except now it isn't because it took destuctive forces to remove it) I am back to square one in finding out why the speedometer and odometer do not work.
Without them working, it creates an engine code and then I cannot get the car inspected (why do I need to get it inspected you ask? Because by late February I have to bring proof of inspection before the judge!).
The code is P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction which includes various symptoms:
A code P0500 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
I replaced the VSS with a new one and that did not fix anything (so there's something else I bought that I didn't need to).
I am at a loss as to what I should do next.
BTW, here's my little corner of the garage where I break things then fix them:

The code is P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction which includes various symptoms:
- loss of anti-lock brakes
- the "anti-lock" or "brake" warning lamps on the dash may be lit - Yep, I removed the lamp to see what will happen next
- the speedometer or odometer may not work properly (or at all) - Yep
- your vehicle's RPM limiter may be decreased
- the shifting of an automatic transmission may become erratic
- other symptoms may also be present

- The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not reading (functioning) properly
- There is a broken/frayed wire leading to the vehicle speed sensor
