Yep. Keep the RPMs reasonable too, like around 55-5700ish max... which is about the practical limit of OEM type lifters anyway. The harmonics from ultra-high RPMs can have some rather nasty effects on stock blocks. :tongue3:

Good tune. Good fuel. Reasonable RPMs.

Good to go.

Paul.

Hey Paul, does that ring true for any build with OEM type roller lifters?

Back in the day, all we had were stock-block, stock bottom-end 302s with S-Trims pushing 16 psi. With a good heads/cam/intake, you're right at 500 horsepower to the tires and having a blast.

Paul.

Oh yeah..

The stock rotating assembly is pretty strong. You'll break the block before you snap the crank.

I remember back in the late 90's when J302 heads and GT40's were top notch. People running A-Trims were owning everyone.

I've "heard" of folks making them live reasonably at up to ~6100 rpms, which is probably fine in a drag car... but I'd be a little worried about valve float and overall valve control myself. I'm sure you'd get a million different opinions on that, but there's mine. Maybe I'm too conservative.

FWIW, the original 331 in my old road racecar was a 12.5 to 1 compression solid roller 7400 rpm race motor. It lasted an entire season of racing before it finally did the normal "block split" right up the front of the block where the timing cover bolts in, then down the valley. At that point, a couple of main caps let go and it was total carnage. The former owner showed me pictures of the damage... it was pretty gnarly. That motor probably only made a little over 400 to the tires, but that much RPM in endurance road racing events eventually split the block. Again, RPM did it, not power.

Remember when you were absolutely king of the street if you had a 175 shot of nitrous? Ahh, those were the days.

Yea, my pile won't see the high side of 5500 cuz I'm gonna be a ween about it for a while. Plus, drag racing is for people who can't multi-task.

oh wow, never thought I would hear the 90s rocked.

Back then they were grungy chicks though, big bangs and hair spray. Hoods was the proper terminology in my area.....

Im 33 now, I remember my first ride in a Fox 5.0 back in high school. To my knowledge it was stock but it felt like the fastest thing on the planet at the time, how things change with time.......

As far as the OP question I would just get a safe tune and keep the RPM's in the normal range and it would be fine. If you do an aftermarket block you can get 600-700 HP but why would you want that much other then drag race applications or just to say you have a 600+ HP Mustang? If that's your goal that thats fine but if you just want a hard strong running H/C/I engine w/ a SC then 500 HP is fine w/ the 302/347. Strap on a set of 205cc heads a custom blower cam and what ever intake you choose and it will be stout. There are many places that sell good 347 stroker kits
