you should first be advised that if you plan to keep the SC on the car, you would be wise to start with an aftermarket block. Like a Boss or Dart.

As for a combo... I'd run some 200+ cc heads, a custom cam, and a Edelbrock super victor EFI. 50-60# injectors would be wise depending on how much boost you decide to run.

If your in the Military, let me say Thank you for Serving!

now.....

Ditto on the aftermarket block...... unless.... you can find a late 60's 351 block (much stronger than later blocks, thicker casting) or a mexican 302 block from the 60's..... (same deal) the stock 5.0 blocks are somewhat sturdy, but wont take much to break if you accidentally get into detonation, etc.

Ditto on the heads as well, I would watch Racingjunk.com, you can usually find some really nice heads on there for not too much, sometimes complete engines too.

For example, the current setup Im working on is a 9.5:1 compression, 310 CI Boss block with forged eagle crank, forged H beam rods, DSS custom forged pistons, Trick Flow 210cc TW heads, a parker funnelweb converted to EFI, a wilsons manifolds 90mm adapter elbow, 90mm throttle body, a Vortech S trim (for now), 60# injectors and a blow thru PMAS HPX. the car will have a 255 in tank pump, Trex external, and aftermarket fuel rails too. I plan to upgrade the rest of the fuel system eventually. I am running a stock, although smoothed and worked over, oil pump, and a custom "blower" grind Lunati hyd roller cam.

I hope this gives you a good idea of what combos work well (i havent run mine, but it has been a proven combo before). post up with any questions, there are a lot of guys here that have a lot of experience, and would be glad to help!

if you dont want to buy an aftermarket block right away, like me, just try to stay under 550hp to the wheels. i've heard from most tuners that thats about the max for a 5.0.

eagle/probe rotating assemblies are what everyone recommended for me.

99% of people don't need an aftermarket block. If you have a good tune, keep the RPM's reasonable, and don't make a zillion horsepowers, you'll be fine. All the kids who have never had a fast car in their life tell everyone you MUST have an aftermarket block because that's what they read on the internetz. Is a race block good? Yep. But absolutely necessary for the overwhelming majority of combinations out there? Nope.

Haha, Happy New Year White 95. BTW, I don't include you in the group of folks who have never had a fast car and don't know what they're talking about. :tongue3:

^^^ and with all the money spend on machine work and rotating assembly its kind of a waste not to get a block. he could just turn up the boost and forget about stroking it.

The amount of money (outside of the block) needed to make over 600 horsepower is prohibitive and unnecessary for most people. You can still use somewhat "normal" parts on a 500 horsepower car. Getting into the 600-700 range starts requiring all sorts of shenanigans and a shit-ton of money. You have to build the entire car around it, costing tens of thousands by the time you're done. A car that makes 500 to the wheels can still be reliable, doesn't require an aftermarket fuel system, a ridiculous transmission, and so on. All the while, it's still fun to drive.

Back in the day, all we had were stock-block, stock bottom-end 302s with S-Trims pushing 16 psi. With a good heads/cam/intake, you're right at 500 horsepower to the tires and having a blast.

hey paul

so do you think i'll be fairly safe with a good tune with my stock block at about 500-550hp to the wheels?
