summit ignition questions

well i just bought the summit ignition digital box ( SUM-850600 ). i read instructions and says i must use a spiral core/wound spark plug wire with this ignition box.second what is a good rev limit to set on my 95 gt. i currently have an msd coil and frpp 9mm wires with motorcraft plugs. can someone help me choose a good set of wires for my application. oh prefer to have wires in black( have the black thing going on in the engine bay). thanks everyone.

Your FRPP wires should work fine. You can also go with any spiral core wire from MSD, Taylor, Moroso, etc... Just no solid core ones. (aka Heli-Core)

Unless you have significant engine mods, (I don't know what you have) the stock 6250 limiter is more than adequate.

Ya, i have the crane cams setup... i thought its kinda cool... for my launch control i used a standard relay wires backwards so i could use the ground wires from my "off" button for my cruise control... so you can just push and hold down your cruise control button (while the rpms stay at what you set it, and when you take off, release it, and it will rev.

I usually launch a 2800 at sea level, and 3200 at where im at, (4,000 above sea level).

i was thinking of going with taylor or accel. my mods are all bolt-ons,msd cap/rotor,70mm tb,tfs street intake,bbk long tubes,3.73',cai.
what about gapping for plugs or what type of plugs?

Yep, with those mods your oem limiter will be fine.

You can just use some NGK TR6s (if memory serves) or any standard copper plug really. Since you're NA, you can gap 'em loosely - .054 I think. Can someone else speak up here? I'm old and forget things.

Also, if your car pings (like so many 94-95s) then you can use a one-step colder plug.

as far as pinging my car doesnt seem to do that. but as of now i ordered the msd super conductor wires. think they are the 8.5mm.will the motorsport plugs work the same. i know ngk is pricey,lol. but thanks for the info.

NGKs usually aren't expensive. I think I pay a little less than two bucks a plug for mine. Of course, uber-iridium plugs are expensive, but most of the time unnecessary.

You'll be just fine with motorsport plugs though if that's what you'd like to use. Heck, I use cheapie autolites in my racecar.

well the box is in and put new plugs gapped at .054. kept my frpp wires on till my msd's come in on friday. turn car on and started up nice and easy. let it sit for a minute or two and took it for a little spin. in first gear out of my driveway, it had a slight misfire/popping. got into rest of gears and the misfire/pooping was more noticeable at a constant speed. just gone on it once and it felt very responsive.after that just came home and recheck all wires and connections. everything was correct to my view. what could be the reason for the misfire/popping?thanks guys.

Are you sure you put all the wires back on all the correct plugs?

double checked them to be safe, but what i always do is change one at a time that way i dont cross a wire to the wrong plug. also, could it be that - wire from box is grounded to chassis instead of battery. could that be problem of why it might be acting up?so confused right now. :wall:

Start troubleshooting by bypassing the ignition box. If the stumbling goes away, then you know it's related to either the box itself, or the wiring thereof.

well unplugged the box and car runs fine. so it has to be something with the box.i will recheck the wiring for a poor connection.

I don't know, just throwing it out there. I thought I heard that you were supposed to gap the plugs more or less with an ignition box? :dunno: Cant remember. .054 is stock I could have sworn it needed to be different. Good luck though let us know what you find out.

well i had thought about gapping slightly larger. but i gapped to factory spec. getting new wires today and put them on,hoping wires could of been bad.

put the spanking new wires on and ignition box.idles smooth and turns on great. now i have the problem of small misfires/popping in slow speeds,but when pedal is floored-man car is sooo responsive and runs hard. i think that i will just quit giving myself headaches and just leave box out and put up for sale.dont have time to find out what is causing this little misfire,so look for the box in classifides.thanks guys for all your help.

i have the summit box and that happened to me, summit ignition boxes puts out 3 sparks instead of only 2 sparks like msd's do and summits puts out more, so you have to gap your plugs more, and what kind of gas do you put in the car
