take off the distributor cap, mark on the intake where the rotor button points to, pull it out, replace with new one, making sure the rotor button points to the same spot.... Thats how I used to do it back when I had a dizzy :)

Yep - easy peasy. The rotor is going to rotate a little bit to the right from when you stab it until when it falls into place. So when you put it back in, have the rotor pointing a few degrees to the left and it will rottate to your mark on the intake.

You don't need to if you mark it first. If you get totally screwed up, then you can bump it over to the mark on the balancer, then point the rotor at number one. If if doesn't fire, or fires and blows flames, just pull it up, turn the rotor 180 degrees, and drop it back down.

okay cool its just I talked to my buddy and hes a mechanic and made it sound pretty complicated and easy to get off by a tooth, id rather not find TDC but if you think it will make it easier for me in the long run then I will. Ill try to mark the dizzy in as many places as possible like a mark from the rotor on the intake or where ever its easy to be off by a couple mm is it not or will it be noticable?

thanks

u cant really get the rotor off a mm. if you get it close to where it needs to be when you start it it will fall right into place where it should. its not that hard. might want to check the timing with a light or you could just time it by ear too i guess.

No, you can't because the bottom of the dizzy is keyed to the oil pump drive. So... If it won't sit all the way down, DO NOT reach down there and turn the pump. Rather, pull the dizzy up and rotate the rotor further back and try again.

okay makes sense so the TDC again is a waste of time?

Yeah it's not needed. Pull the cap, stick a piece of tape wherever the rotor is pointed, pull the distributor, take note of how far the rotor rotates as you pull it (not sure on Fords, but on Chevy's, it'll go about 30 degrees, counterclockwise). Then reverse that order.

It won't hurt, hell take a pic if it makes you more comfortable. It's one of those thing's that totally freaks you out, until you do it.
