Swapping pistons, do I need new rods?

My shortblock is freshly rebuilt and has low compression pistons. I changed my plans and now want high compression pistons. My local machine shop said I would need new rods because the pins would not fit properly. is this true?

depends on what kind of wrist pins they are set up for.

I have press fit pin pistons. does that mean if I dont get pistons that are set up for press fit I have to get new rods?

Yes. Press fit pin pistons must use press fit pin rods and the same for floating pins.
