T5 Rebuild

How hard is it to do a T5 Rebuild? Using a kit from a company like D&D etc...

i HEAR its pretty difficult. also, the price of the kit and time for an amatuer (not calling you an amatuer) to install isnt worth it. tranny shops get the parts much cheaper and can install quickly at a good price. i have looed into this a lot.

1st t-5 i had. replaced 2nd gear, checked everything else, installed new syncrodes and a couple other little things $320
2nd t-5- blown 2nd, and 4th, wanted to charge $400. parts alone out of a catologe cost $300

the one i have now just needs new syncrodes and will cost roughly $200-250. i have gotten MANY quotes

t-5's = sh!t. if you have the money to get something else, don;t waste your time.

sorry for the semi-thread jacking... but would it be beneficial to actually repair a blown t-5 or to just replace it?

if replacing it what would you guys recommend. I'm guessing the first thing to go on my car will be the t-5 once my vortech is on... but I hate to have a like new centerforce clutch in there that I wouldn't be able to use with an aftermarkit 26 spline tranny...

If you want a stock feel of shifting then an astro t-5 built for 650 Hp would be what to get. On the other hand if you want a hardcore never willing to break tranny then get a tko 600 with a face plate.

The only reason why I asked is because around here they charge 100 an hour to work on the tranny. Plus the rebuild kit is 200. So I was told at least 400.... I am pretty sure I can rebuild it myself, but I just havent been able to talk to anyone who has before.

It's very possible to rebuild your t5. If you've rebuilt a motor you can rebuild one easy. I actually think they're easier to work on. But you have to do your homework beforehand. Go to a bookstore and get a book on rebuilding them. I've rebuilt twice and it holds up pretty well. But if your gonna make real power you should save and buy something stronger. It just won't hold up. I've ran mine on a punch of passes with a 200 shot and slicks and its on borrowed time. It'll be the weak link for you. I wouldn't invest in the astro performance kit since it'll still be a t5 and still has its weak points. I would save the 900 you'd spend on that get and get a tko.

I'm going to be taking my T5 apart soon with a friend of mine who has rebuilt a bunch of them. He says it's not too bad. However, if lots of parts are broken, the rebuild can get a bit expensive. Still cheaper than a new one though.

Can I come down and watch you rebuild it Paul? I rather see someone who knows WTF they are doing.... After all there are a lot of dumb shits around now adays. I actually think I am going to get a book or DVD on how to rebuild it.

a friend and i went through mine when i got it to make sure it was in good shape. they are actually fairly simple. it would be a good idea to get the book to get the correct specs. i would even talk to the professionals in the tech dept at astro performance or d&d and see what they say as far as upgrades go. they are less complicated than an automatic tranny.
