Ok so I had alittle fun with a built S4 today. Through the first 3 gears I was not embarrassed, we didn't go much further cause we went different directions. I figured non-pi would not have been as close. I've had the same experience with my roommates STI that puts 325 to the wheels. The first three gears I am close then after he slowly pulls on me. I'm not getting excited I was just curious because I feel like I should get spanked in both cases.

His friend has an 04 S4 with the N/A V8 and it took my 4.10's, full exhaust and full 03 PI engine to only pull him a full car length going 45 to about 140.

well, for one if you have the oil fill on the passenger side thats a sign for PI, lol 
Also your intake manifold runners would be different....

I have the oil fill on my driver's side, it depends who did the swap and how. One way to check is to pull off your alternator, look under the intake manifold, or put your hand under there and if the underside of the intake runners are flat then its non-pi. Also, take a flashlight and shine it under the intake manifold to see if your coolant tube goes straight back, if it does = non-pi. If the intake manifold in rounded underneath and you really cant see the coolant tube except for a few inches(it then turns to the driver's side head and runs along the side of the head) then its atleast a PI intake.
no need to do all that. NPI intake first runner runs to the passenger side to cylinder 1, PI intake first runner runs to the drivers side cylinder 5.
no way to tell if the heads are PI unless you take the intake or valve covers off, then you'd see the D shaped intake ports, or with the valve cover off you'll see PI stamped.

I didn't think that . I know this forum has helped me with numerous problems for my car .It has such a great knowledge base , I can usually find the answer I was looking for in the search function.

i didnt take his comment as "smart ass". he called you sherlock because like i said its pretty common knowledge what years are PI and which are nPI, and your answer was which cars were and werent. i think he just meant that they knew that.
