well guys ive been doing what my dad suggested and not using 5th gear unless im doing about 45. so when im on most streets.. im doing 40mph at about 1900 rpms. well, ever since then ill go to a stoplight or stop sign and there will be an extremely loud rattling.. then it will eventually go away. when we bought the car the gentleman mentioned something about a bell housing rattling.. but he said he fixed it and that we dont have to worry about it. so could it be a bell housing? (and inform me what that is, if you would be so kind.) or is it something else? on the other hand, i started putting it in 5th which puts me at about 1200 rpms and now there is no rattling.. at all. i dont get it. :dontknow:

The bellhouse is basically what hold the tranny and motor together if I'm not mistaken. Pretty sure, but I could be off because I'm an idiot. I have no idea how it could be rattling though. Swing by Martin and we can switch cars adn I'll get back to you on it.

You ask or the impossible diagnosis over the internet. Ovbiously if this is the same type of nosie as when the prior owner had the vehicle, then it could have come back. Maybe call him and ask what he did and if he could just hear it as to confirm or deny that its the same noise.

Next you will need to ( I believe ive told you this before) DIAGNOSE where its coming from, does it change if you rev the engine when its rattling?? change when the cluth is disengage? or is it related to speed???

after that you can start to narrow things down from there....

well if you need a better description it only starts when im at a complete stop in gear with clutch in or in neutral. it starts out loud then fades down and eventually stopps after about 5 seconds or so. then it goes away. it sounds like on the inside its coming from the engine bay on the passenger side.

A npise problem is simply annoyingly tough to diagnose through the internet. Someone else might describe the noise differently than someone else so its really tough to make any good information on it. Have someone knowledgable look at it, thats going to be the only thing that'll get you going in fixing it.

I do this type of work as a living.... i get information from people but its difficult if you talk to someoen who thinks they know when they have no clue so the assume they know what the noise is and are like "its a shock" when come to find out its a sway bar bushing or something else..... The less you know the better.

You have a rock in the bell housing, or maybe a bolt fell out of your clutch, or it could be any number of silly crazy things. Start with simple, then work your way out. First you need to isolate exactly where it is coming from.

True but what I was trying to say is some people might call it a rattle and some people might call it something else. Descriptive words can be confusing if everyone doesn't use the same ones. And noises can travel in vehicles and stuff too.

I had a noise in my Bronco's rearend that seriously sounded like Chewbacca was in passenger side engine compartment. It was really odd, but everyone described it a bit different. Finannly got some time to take it to the local transmission shop that does a lot of work for us and he drove it and decided it was the rear end and when they got it pulled about, the entire differential had started to come apart and a bunch of other crazy nonsense. They ended up puttting a whole nother rear end from a different truck in it. Basically, I'm just trying to say it could be a lot of different things.

Osama is hiding in your bell housing. to be safe you should take apart your car and sell the parts for well below market price. then look for him.
