I will admit to the crime of letting my car run out of gas. I've let it run out til it cuts off a couple of times in the past couple of months. Honestly I'm just lazy I don't feel like stopping all the time to get gas, problem with that is I live so far from any gas stations so when I do actually go to get gas I run out. The fact that my gas gauge doesn't work doesn't help the problem at all. Anyway, it didn't really have any problems till Friday. I was stuck in traffic and it cut off cause it was over heating (another issue my car has, it's not over heating but it thinks it is), well I crank it back up and pull into to the parking lot of the place I was trying to get to. I let the car sit for a good 25 minutes. I cranked it back up and it sounded like it was legit over heating, though even the gauge didn't say it was and why would it when its been sitting turned off for almost half an hour. By the time I make it to the exit of the parking lot the car revs down and dies. It wouldn't crank for a little while. When it finally did, it seemed normal again. I drove it tonight and it seemed like theres a long reaction time from when you push the gas pedal to when the car actually revs. Like it has very little power. This is during normal driving, the best way I can describe the feeling is like when you're going slow in a high gear and try to accelerate but don't really go anywhere. While I'm driving, I can hear a low, fast tapping noise. It sounds like its near the firewall right in front of the driver, but it's quiet and fast. I'm wondering if it has to do with my fuel pump. Any ideas?

Tapping might be the injectors? Mine are loud as hell for some reason, thought it was a head tick but they're just really loud..

ouchy dosent sound good at all IMO, hope the motor is ok. the taping noise has nothing to do with fuel. maybe a lifter. but running any motor hot isnt good, but its your DD and sometimes you cant help it, i had the same problem. I just hope your car isnt a ticking time bomb now

If I've learned anything after having 3 of theses cars its never trust the factory gauges. If you think they aren't reading right its probly cause they ain't. So even tho your temp gauge was reading normal id get a temp gun and check it just for security.

That tapping noise by the driver side fire wall.....can you feel it in your foot?...Could be the oil pump or spun bearing.. but that noise is a bit slower sounding and goes away in acceleration

Run some fuel injector cleaner in it or something see if it clears up.....

Also, listen for the click when you turn your key to the on position...if you dont hear a clean click (your injectors priming) or the click sounds stumbbley then it may be a fuel pump/relay issue....

I was suprised when my car was on the dyno in phoenix that the gauge showed it was normal but his data showed it was already hot enough that it was pulling timing to try and cool itself off. Thats why I went out and got new gauges after doing my HCI swap as I just do not trust them at all.

What is it overheating in feb for?

My guess would be a fuel delivery issue. Does it stumble a lot when you are trying to accelerate, as though it's missing?

It seems like not only have you hit a bad luck streak.... I have too. When I started hearing a tapping noise I immediately checked the oil and it was two quarts low. Come to find out I spun a rod bearing... So FML on that one..

Recently in the yellow stang? If so, wow :(

Anyways. Yeah I'm slightly skeptical about the factory guages, but there accurate enough. If your fuel guage isn't working the sender might be messed up in the gas tank that makes the needle go to full and empty. Most likely needs to be replaced! I would never drive a car thats over heating. These heads are aluminum and I know aluminum doesn't like a lot of heat. Check your fans if they are turning on, and if so check your thermostat to see if its opening at 192/195 degrees. Overheating is very very bad.

Is your gas gauge always on Empty? I just got mine fixed. Wasn't to involved. On my car the actual float broke off and was floating inside the tank. I too ran out of gas numerous times... it got the point where i almost got rear ended when i ran out on a busy street. I got it fixed the next day...

Try the fuel filter first.. pretty easy to change

My car is not overheating. We diagnosed the issue last semester. The gauge reads high and the car shuts off, but it never actually over heats. There's something I have to replace but I can't remember what part it was, it's written down somewhere lol. It's NOT overheating, that's not the issue.

I forgot to mention, my starter has been trying to go out for quite some time, if yall think that might have something to do with the noise? But like I said it feels like there's a pretty big loss of power and a longer reaction time between when I press the gas pedal and when the car actually revs or accelerates.

The gauge sometimes shows I have a full tank, then the next time I crank it, it'll be on half, then it'll have more the next time etc. It changes how much is in there a lot. I'll definitely check that out!

The starter is getting heat soaked so thats why its hard to turnover sometimes. My car runs perfectly fine but sometimes in the summer when it gets really hot, you get those weird "hot" starts where it almost barely turns over. This could be just further a long the line of problems of the heat issue your having with your car. I would look into the cooling system, pressure test the rad, check water pump, and thermostat. And finally make sure your fans are turning on at the right time.

Well, as stated, I would run some injector cleaner, maybe like half a can of seafoam in the gas and half a can in the oil.

Your starter make that wicked crunch noise when you start it?

I also reccomend the fuel filter. It mostly sounds like a fuel delivery issue

As I've said a couple times before, the car is not overheating. We ran every test last semester. My cooling system is strong.

I have to add a quart of oil about every week, it's not leaking but burning it, I have to constantly check it to make sure it's never low. I'll definitely get some injector cleaner. I've never cleaned them before, pretty sure the owners before me never did either seeing as they never took care of the car.

you sure she isn't leaking out of the valve covers at all?

could have more on your hands if you are burning that much oil =/

Valve covers are good. No leaking. It has a lot of issues, keep in mind it's got a minimum 350,000 miles on it, but I'm just trying to keep it running until I can get another motor to put in it. My poor car hasn't had a good life.
