You know that you can take the rotor out and place it where it's needed right???

Also if you had the timing chain off make sure you got that on right as well...

BTW make SURE you have TDC on the piston... Pull the plug and feel it out...

Having similar issue with starting. Replaced Dist and i believe i have the motor tdc, used a paper towel in the #1 so when it pushed out i think that should put tdc correct?

take the cap off and mark the inside of the distributor with a sharpie where each post would be in the firing order

crank the motor over by hand so the timing pointer is at 0 on the dampener

look at the rotor, it should be at one of two places.

slighty to the right of 1 or midway between 2 and 6

if its at the later then rotate it again to "0" and it should be slightly to the right of 1

if it is no where close to that then rotate the dist to get it to where it should be. if you run out of side to side adjustment with the dist you will need to pull it and move the rotor so get it closer to where it should be (slightly to the right of post 1)

remember that the rotor will want to go counter clockwise when the gear grabs so you will have to play with it to get it to drop in the best spot

if you have it near 1 and the car won't run or runs like poop then you need to rotate the motor again to "0" and re-seat it as you were at bdc and not tdc

there is no such things as being a tooth off as people like to say, you technically just run out of side to side adjustment because the dist will hit something

hope that helps

If you crank the motor by hand than you can put your finger in the spark plug hole and feel the piston... It will not hurt you if you turn the crank by hand...

crank the motor over by hand so the timing pointer is at 0 on the dampener.. excuse my lack of understanding.. Noob in training, However you are referring to the bracket that says time on it correct? So the line on the balancer should be lined up with this also correct.. ?

not starting . so should i rotate again until #1 piston is at the top again, or just rotate it to 0 and not worry about the piston position?

ok. i see it . the eye hole and 0 should be lined up correct

not the EYE hole, to the right of that is the edge of the pointer, this is where you get your timing readings from. when 0 is there you're at TDC number 1.

No one mentioned that you have to make sure your on the compression stroke. Listen for air blowing out of the plug hole. 10* of advance with the spout connector out is what you are shooting for so, instead of setting the pointer on 0* line it up with the 10* advance mark. Then make sure your rotor button is centered with the #1 post on your cap. It will start easy doing it that way.

ok. so once i feel the compression pushing through my finger in #1 and i set the 0 on the edge of the pointer, also have the rotor pointed towards the 1 plug on the cap it should start?
