Hey guys, I need your help. My 5-speed 94 with a World Class T-5 is grinding while in 1st-3rd gear. Especially on decelleration...it's weird. I'm talking while the clutch is out and the car is actually in gear. My 4th and 5th are completely smooth. Any suggestions as to what it can be? I can feel it through the shifter as if it's making metal to metal contact of some sort. Driving me nuts. Anyone face this issue before? I've read a couple random posts, but nothing specific. Please tell me what you think. Thanks.

Also, the grinding sound goes away when the clutch is pressed in. Maybe throwout or pilot bearing? I would think it would make the sound in all gears though. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks.

Mainshaft bearings? I would think if it was mainshaft bearing it would be bad no matter what gear, but it's possible.

If it was grinding while trying to enter a gear I would say misadjusted clutch or bad blocker rings.

Very weird, although I did come across this post on theturboforums.com about someone else's similar issue with a T-5. It just doesn't specify which bearings.

"The whine is a sign it is dying and needs bearings. 1st-3rd the power goes from input down to countershaft and up to the output shaft, So if there is a bearing problem it shows up in 1-3rd gears and 4th is alway quiet because it couples the input to the output shaft taking the load off of the bearings. eventually the bearings get worse and the cluster moves futher away from the countershaft under power till it breaks. I've helped the whine in some T5's by mixing a 50/50 mix of tranny fluid and gear oil 80/90wt"

World class T5s use needle bearings between the mainshaft and gears, the mainshaft is held in place by conical bearings on each side of the main case by the input shaft retainer and the tailshaft housing. The needle bearings tend to go bad when the trans had been run too hot or too low on fluid.

5th gear is outside of the main case, in the tailshaft, and could explain why your whine doesn't show up in 5th. As far as 4th gear, 4th does couple the input to the output shaft (1:1 ratio) but I don't know why it would make 4th not grind while 1-3 do.
