Under dash unit?

I'd rather post a video, but couldn't figure it out.
Can anyone identify what this unit is underneath the radio and in front of the shifter? It appears to have fins on it like a heat sink. Mine is loose and has wires coming out of it.
Sorry to be such a noob. I've never had any SN95s apart this far and this particular car is new to me so I'm not sure what previous owners might have taken apart.

the front mach amp. If your battery is going dead, that is probably why.

Interesting. This car isn't equipped with the Mach 460 system. I wonder if a previous owner bought one and just stuck it in there (hence it's being loose). I finally removed the storage cup above it and I can move the entire unit around. It has a Ford sticker on it with a serial #.

there was a premium sound system between the two that had that amp up there. This was probably the case with yours.

This. I pulled mine a year or 2 ago because I had a battery drain.
Went through a couple batteries

yea most people do not even know it is there like this. Even if they install an aftermarket deck and bypass the deck with the power still connected it will still drain the battery.

If it is not draining the battery and you already have an aftermarket deck you might be able to sell it for a few bucks for someone desperate to keep the stock stereo. By this point the stock speakers are long wore out but some people really want to.

This is all very good information, as my son's '95 has the factory Mach 460 system and he definitely has a power drain.
Question: For his car, is there an appropriate amp, aftermarket or otherwise, I can plug in if I unplug his? And, as for mine, if I unplug the amp and remove it, will the aftermarket Sony CD player that's in the car still work? Or will some sort of bypass be necessary?

there is not an aftermarket amp that works well with the speakers they picked. Depending on how the system is wired if you disconnect it you may or may not lose sound. If ya do then you will probably need to replace the speakers to get a more common impedance/resistance so that the deck can work with them

You can use any 2 channel amplifier with an adjustable LPF to drive the factory mach woofers but it requires knowing a thing or two about how audio systems work and how the mach system works in particular .. which unfortunately most people don't.

The best possible thing to do is delete every trace of the Mach system and run component speakers either directly from the head unit or an aftermarket 4 channel amp if you really need more muscle. Bypass (and remove) the under dash amp, the harness is all there and easy - the door tweeter wires can be commandeered to run door components so you don't need to run any new wires. Do not reuse the Mach woofer wiring, just tape it off so it doesn't rattle or remove it entirely.

I know anyone on the internet can say anything about their qualifications; this is my industry. I've worked for a major name brand car & commercial audio manufacturer for almost 25 years & hopefully have some idea of what I'm doing at this point.
