its time, spring is here, boost is coming and my tires are bald.
whats the biggest tire that will fit a 17x9 cobra wheel?
currently im running a 275/40(or45 to lazy to look)r17 they fit well but still look small. i want a bit more meat still, i'll check craigslist for a pair 17x10's to make tire choice better but i'll probly have to make due with what i have.

thoughts and knowledge?

!UPDATE!
it happened today, browsing local tire shops when my boss called me. He wanted me to join him for breakfast and chat. I told him what i was up to and he told me I had to do it. Im thinking great the guy that gives me money is going to find the most expensive stuff.

long story short, He hooked me up with a discount (contractors... go figure) I get to ditch my 1" spacers. I scored some 275/55r17's today and on Wensday I have a pair of 275/40r17's for the front coming in. Best of all, he put it on his account and said don't worry about paying for them until June's pay period, July 5th.

Re: biggest rears tires on 17x9 cobras

i know that. onyx i know in the past we've gone round for round on tires. everyone told me 225's wouldnt fit 17x9 cobras but they do. i know i can go bigger, i want some more sidewall and maybe just a 285 if i can find it. i know 275's are already 11"1 wide on a 9" bead to bead wheel but would the extra .4" make it not fit?

Re: biggest rears tires on 17x9 cobras

just cause a tire fits a rim doesn't mean its proper for it. It's all what you want, you can go ahead and smoosh a 285 or 295 on a 9" rim if you want to but if you already know what is the right size and already know what you want then why did you make a post asking about it?

fwiw I ran 275 Nittos on my 17x8s and they fit and look great, but the middle of the tire wore faster than the outside because the tire was bowing because it was too wide for the rim. the tire manufacturers don't put recommended wheel sizes for nothing.

Re: biggest rears tires on 17x9 cobras

Newer Ford F-150 rims are 18x8 and use 275 wide wheels :p. I agree with onyx, just because it fits doesn't mean its proper. When I get new tires I'm selling 2 of my Saleen 18x9s and getting 2 18x10s so I can use 295 tires properly. Fitting on a 225 on a 9" rim is pure tuner garbage, and whoever came up with that tuner stretching fad should be shot.

rice_slayer, calm down meow. putting a 225 on a 9" wide wheel is called working in a budget and using what you got... aka broke mans fix. its not on there for looks, its there to keep my car rolling.

anyway $$$ is coming in finally, worked picked up. i need rears and just want a bit more sidewall i guess but im afraid its just gonna look like a damn jeep tire.

would a 275/50-55 be to tall?

Re: biggest rears tires on 17x9 cobras

when I bought my car it had like 205 55's on it. It looked goofy but it rolled.

Now, if you had 50 in the back and staggered to 40 up front I don't think it would look bad at all, but I love the rake

Re: biggest rears tires on 17x9 cobras

its so hard to choose when i change my mind 5 times a day. i was looking at 275/55's and they are crossover sport truck tires. i still have stock springs so i have room to work, and i've fit a jeep wheel with 28" tires on a 94 with ford b springs without rubbing. im tire shop bound today i'll let you guys see what i pick out.

275/55? Oh God. It's not that 225 on a 9" rim even looks bad, I mean it does, but I wouldn't even feel safe driving on a tire stretched like that.

onyx your 100% right. i don't feel safe with those little rubber bands up front. steering is nice and light tho.

im getting 275/40's for the front and am going to drop the nose a bit once they are on so i know what i have to work with.
also going to roll the rear fenders to be safe.

No offense man...but that looks horrible. Thats a truck tire you just put on your car. 275/40's on the back, and 255's up front. Thats WAY too much sidewall. It looks like it needs a foot print gas pedal and yosemite sam "back off" mudflaps.

Prepare to stare at your ABS light every time you drive, that is a 25.7" front tire with a 28.9" rear, as soon as you start to drive your light will come on and stay on

Honestly, in my opinion way that is way too much sidewall for your car on the rear and you may find yourself scrape due to the height of the tire. My DR's are only a 28" tread and this is how they fit on stock suspension

This made me lol. Another thing that is funny is when people have stock stangs and run a 10.5 wheel with 315 DR's out back.

sn95gtvert - why do you want all that sidewall?

That. Looks. Gross. Sorry man, but the only time you should have big sidewall is for a slick/DR like joekd has, Bottlefeds car too. I should have put those on my old stang, then I could really be 4x4ing, that IS an SUV tire though...

Ive seen the guys on svtperformance put 315 40 17 on stock 04 cobra wheels, which are 17x9

* note : they have to be nitto 555R's however (they tend to run smaller than other brands)
