Just buy a $500 PI motor out of a low mileage Vic/Marquis/Towncar and swap it in. They're around if you look.

its possible to be bad out of the box. Only way to test that I know of is to disconnect the wires at the dist. Yes the car will have a miss but the tick will go away when you pull the corrosponding bad wire.

I just picked up a good running low mile 01 crown vic engine, npi of course. Im going to tear it down, clean it up, freshen it up while checking it over mapping it out, and throw in my little tricks. Target price will be roughly $2000 completed

We need to figure out exactly what you expect from all this engine work? 1. A good running stock hp car or 2. A good running improved hp car?

I thought the Panther cars all got PI swapped in 01. Was it 02?

I paid $525 plus $50 delivery fee for an 05 Marquis PI engine with 39k on it. That's what I would look for again or if you can find a real good deal on an Aviator engine and 4V swap it. The Vic/Marquis/Towncar PI engines are great candidates especially the low mileage ones because they were very likely owned by an old person and never saw over 3K RPM in their lives. I know the 05 I had was out of a car sold off in an estate sale when the owner passed away.
