And thought I'd share, just as a point of reference for those curious and/or interested in weight reduction.

I've always been into weight reduction, I just like the feeling of making a car lighter and more focused, and enjoy the all-around benefits (accel, handling, gas mileage, braking etc). My previous car was a modded 96 maxima that I had down to 2800 lbs with full interior (ran 14.6 @96).

The new car is a near-stock 96 GT T45 (just ebay intake and a 93 octane tune for the time being). It's pretty well optioned with leather int, all power, mach 460, factory 17s. I've already started on some weight reduction and the weight I got yesterday (at local junkyard scale - free:) already reflects 80 pounds of reduction. Ive already taken out or swapped out:

- mach 460 rear deck (23)
- 17s for 16" waffle rims save 25lbs (weighed each w/tires - alot of the savings is in the tires)
- floor mats (mine were 8lbs)
- STB (8)
- wing (8)
- dash plate under steering wheel (3)
- trunk cardboard (4)
- Seatbelt holder thingies on front seats (1?)

Most ideas are from the WR thread on the modular misfits site.

With about 3/8 tank of gas it was 3260. :crying:

My first thought was :eek:uttahere: and get into a fox body notch if I want light. Then I remembered why I got a 96 in the first place (pi swap and modular coolness, better structure/ride/handling/style etc), and decided to keep going with some semi-sane weight reduction (stretch goal is another 100 lbs with full interior, safety sys, and a/c intact). Actually 3260 isn't too bad if you figure it would be more like 3230 with low gas, and then 3200 with no spare/jack -- about 3400 even on a race night with me in it. One good thing about these cars is there's a lot of little things to take out or swap for WR. If there's any interest I'll keep you all posted on my progress this summer. I'm due for a baseline track time soon also.

well remember, you can go with welds, an aluminum block, AL driveshaft, flywheel etc. Lots of iron to be had in the drivetrain that can be changed.

Good point - I forgot all about that stuff because they aren't in this year's budget - still if stay with this car long term, that's where I'm headed. Maybe I should re-state my "stretch goal" to 200 lbs and say that the 100 lb additional WR goal is for this year, on a tight budget. Explorer block/al flywheel/driveshaft is probably 100 lbs right there... sweet another reason to stick with this car long-term.

With an explorer block, tubular k member and a arms you could see up to 155lbs right there.

That's not that bad. Most people are under the impression that our 96-98 GT's weigh upwards of 3400+lbs

lol my impression is that 94-98 stangs were like 3200-3250

99-04s are like 3300-3400

05+ 3500+

Mine weighs about 3,230 pounds with no gas even with these wheels. No weight reduction at all either.

That's pretty light for no WR - is it a 248A?

its probably 100-150 pounds lighter than a normal gt I guess :dunno:
