My 1996 Mustang Gt convertible has a horizontal space that has a plastic cover over it. Does anyone know what this space was designed for? IMG_20220111_092255963.jpg

Well

Thank you! That also explains shy it is blank. I don't believe that Ford offered a defroster on the convertible rear window!
Yep, on the glass back windows. Both my and my wife's 98 GT 'verts have rear defrosters.

Well, I'm shocked! Thanking each of you for clarifying that point.
I would still like to use that position for something...

For anti-theft: Get a junkyard defroster switch, and wire in a relay to the crank circuit (so you'd have to push the defroster switch while turning the key to start the car). You could also wire up a sealed relay (powered by a wire hot in ign and/or start) for the fuel fuel pump circuit. No push the switch, no fuel to the rails.

That IS for the rear defrost button. The MUSTANG was one of the, if not THE only convertibles at that ime which had a glass rear window and defroster. Mine has the glass with visible defrost wires and the switch where you indicate on the dash.

When I bought my 1995 GT convertible (used), that hole had a plate with a red LED, as if there was an alarm. I believe an alarm had been installed and removed by a previous owner (I seem to recall finding a small horn/siren under the hood as well).
The top had been replaced by a top with a plastic rear window and no defroster. I picked up a switch at the junkyard, plugged it into the existing wiring, and (someday) when I install my new top (glass window with defroster) I am hoping it all works.
I like the idea of an ejection seat, but would rather have smoke, or rotating license plates for tolls and photo-radar.
In thoughts unrelated to that switch, I have considered rear aimed washer nozzles with a water/honey solution to leave a harmless, but sticky, mess on tailgaters...
