Could be a few reasons. The gap is small on most clutches so if the bearing fails, the misalignment causes heat which eventually seizes the clutch up essentially welding it.

That’s one failure mode. Could be other reasons as well
Gotcha. For some reason it didn’t even click to me until now that this could happen to my new compressor. Is it possible that the clutch is locking up due to something outside of the A/C system? I just don’t want the same issue to happen after I put several $100 worth of parts into it.

Excessive belt tension? Foreign matter?


What did the parts you took off look like?
