I just got my new gear drive setup....... I have no idea what the piece of round stock at the bottom with the two snap rings is... This something for the older blocks? Mine is a 1994 302 block. Can someone tell me what this piece is please and where it goes.

Yes it is longer if you need additional clearance. I would rethink the gear drive. Not only will it reek havoc on the knock sensors but it will rob horsepower. They are also harder on the valvetrain. A good quality double roller is all you need.

The 94 5.0 doesnt have knock sensors. As far as it robbing horse power..... That is not an issue for this engine as it is only going to be in over the summer. Still would like to know what the piece is though.....

Yep you are right no knock sensor on the 94 and 95. I check Alldata. It is for clearancing the idler gears. Last set I installed I did not need the longer pin.

How "streetable" are you wanting the car to be? B/c that is going to beat the hell out of the valvetrain.

Everytime a cylinder fires, thats an explosion pounding down on the piston to rotate the crank. A chain or belt has some slack or slight stretch to buffer those "poundings" from transfer to the cam shaft which (in a gear drive) would inturn beat against the bottom of the lifters and through the rest of the valvetrain. Yeah, there is NO slack whatsoever in a gear drive...thats the attractive part to it but its also its down side.
