To eliviate any worries, remove vent bolt located above thermostsat, or bleed out any air in the system at the highest point of the system, then fill, bleed air out again.

when driving around my car never goes over the O in Normal on the stock gauge. running a 180 tstat and had the tuner set the fans to come on early when sitting in traffic. Before that it scared me a few times to the point it felt like the car was losing power.

Shit just ignor the stock gauges with how dumb the computer makes them. I personally saw my car on the dyno having problems cooling itself while the gauge never got above the R. The dyno computer showed the motor was up towards 220 and pulling timing to try and cool itself but again I would have never known it in the seat. At that poin I realized why people get gauges, and why I got some gauges a few months later.

I have Edlebrock rpm heads and, like you, I was concerned about high temps. I was told that while you don't want to run temps in the 250* range they will survive. Other than IAT's in that range I saw coolant temps to 240* once and the cooling system was pukeing fluid from the degas/overflow bottle. That's when I got the Be Cool rad and a high flow water pump.

yea after the head/cam install there was no way I was going to trust the stock gauges to tell me what was going on with the motor.

Anyone using the idiot gauge in the stock cluster... no... just no... FWIW, I mine ran a solid 180-190 degrees at all times on a mechanical autometer gauge with a 180 tstat and a dyno tune/fan set to come on at 180.

Mine seems to run around 195 to 205 When it hot, if im moving on the highway or not so hot out it more around 170. I have a brand new radiator water pump and 160 degree thermostat....

I usually ran my car low on coolant just so it would hit that red line. When it hots red I get a nitrous boost when I press the RB trigger

FWIW the engine should generally run closer to 200*F. The stock T-stat starts to open at 195* and isn't fully open until 205*.

Not to be a pain in the ass, but it's important to me- What temp is dead center on the dummy gauge ? 200*?

also when mine gets to it highest temp it is a little over the halfway point so its prob up to 210 degrees at that point since 200-205ish seems dead center when i log it. I go my fan to come on 10 degrees cooler now so ill see what that does for me. I prefer to be 200 or less

The problem with the dummy gauges as we are calling them is there is so much variance. For instance, so many people have pulled off their needles to do the gauge overlays, etc. My temp reads a little higher because I didn't put the needle back on exactly where it should have been. I deal with it.

They aren't exactly accurate by any stretch. Good in a pinch. I'll be investing in some autometers very soon.

Update on my end~ I was running the temp gauge up to 3/4 up, around the letter "M" when the outside temps were up past 95*, had the A/C on Max, and when climbing up and over the Blue Ridge mountains. It was my radiator air deflector under the bumper. It got ripped off and was hanging. I made an aluminum one, bolted it in, and Wow, temps are way, way, way down. Always normal- I'm a happy boy!

That deflector makes all the difference. I use one from a 88 Ranger cut to fit the SN.

There are two. The lead one is attached to the front fascia and the second to the rad support. Here's a pic
