sorry for all the questions folks, but i've been dealing with the ole CEL demon and when i get a chance i've got someone to help out with the paperclip trick on reading the codes.just wondering what some of the common sensors were to set it off.a buddy of mine had a new set of 02's for his 95 and he offered to let me try them and I did so with NO luck.i unhooked the battery for awhile and then rehooked it, when i fired it up the light came on after running for about 5 mins.when it first started coming on awhile back it would come on and off while driving and then later it just stayed on.anyway thanks guys for all your help,i'm still learning so much about this car and i have to say it's nothing like my ole foxbodies LOL!

All sensors that affect exhaust emissions parameters will trip a CEL. Some of these high on the list are the MAF, IAT, ECT and O2's. There are literally hundreds of DTC's but many don't cause a CEL. I personally would spend the $25 to buy a code reader. Here's one from Amazon.

What exactly are the codes your getting? Read your haynes/chilton manual on how to clear codes. yes, removing the neg. bat. cable will clear codes but it's not the prefered method because it will clear other parameters that will need to be reset after start up..

Scan for the codes with the scaner Toyman listed. Dont use the paper clip method its more confusing then anything. Find out exactly what the issue is with the CEL before just throwing parts at it hoping it will go away. Everyone that has an OBDI Mustang should have one of those code scaners, if anyone ops not to then dont try and trouble shoot any issues on your own and just take it to a garage everytime and pay out the butt in dealer costs VS a $20 scanner. Keep in mind anytime a dealer hooks up a car to a scaner its a standard $80-$90 fee regardless of if it spits out any codes or not.

It's not a matter of accuracy. The code reader just reads stored DTC's from the car's computer (ECU) and allows you to run a few tests.

It will spit out a number and look up that number in the book that comes with it. It will tell you what is throwing the code and or the cause of it.

you still need to get a Haynes/chilton manual so you know how to run the KOEO and KOEO tests as well as a cylinder balance tests. BTW. I use the paperclip method. :p
