Royal Purple and Mobil 1 use the same base oil. The only difference between the 2 (besides the price), is that Royal Poop says they add their own "special" additive.

in one of the muscle car magazines (Muscle Car maybe?), they used all new fluids from like Mobil or someone reputable (motor oil, tranny, rear end, etc.) and then switched everything over to Royal Purple. They dyno'd the car both times on an engine dyno and gained 8hp.. just from fluids.

or so an O'Reilly's employee says he read.

It can be challenging to find enough gear lube for one fill at one store. It is also tough to find both 75-90 and 85-140. No one seems to stock more than 3 bottles or any of the heavier grade.

Advance usually is my choice but O'reilly almost always has some motor oil, just limited grades.

Latemodel Resto has decent prices on RP. RP sells direct too but is pricy.

At home in Calif. PepBoy's has good stock and now the filters too.

So, this O'Reilly's employee read that switching to RP from Mobil 1 will free up 8HP? I'm not sure what kind of magazine he read but that's really not possible. Especially since RP and Mobil 1 are basically the same.

OP, you want a good oil? Get Amsoil.

i beleive it... get a 1981 Geo Metro thats never had a tune up and change all the fluids over to RP and im sure it will see gains. .. ... you just have to slant your experiment a little to get the data you want... .. lol.

i dunno, ive read so many reviews that say RP is a waste of money to use on a car that didnt use it its entire life. granted both sides are "stories/articles", but i think until i find hard evidence, im gonna believe the multiple upon multiple articles ive read that say RP is worthless on cars that never ran it previously, over one parts store SALESMAN that claims he read that RP fluids can produce up to an 8hp gain.

if nothing else, id just assume that the parts store employee is telling you this just to get you to shell out the extra money for RP, because its his job. although i never do it, because i see 99% of my customers almost on a daily basis (unlike an auto parts store where you get people every day that youve never seen before), salesman in a store like that are always trying to pitch to you why the more expensive product is better. its all part of sales. he probably makes commission on everything he sells, which in that case, it would make complete sense that he tries to convince complete strangers that RP is better.

Now I feel stupid that I just bought 2 bottles of RP. Maybe after I'm done setting the gears in I will change to a different oil. RP claims their gear oil has friction modifier in it. Is that true? Am I safe just running the RP gear oil and no extra additive? Thanks

i wouldnt pay the extra premium for RP's motor oil, but their gear oil is legit. as for the price of the gear oil, i dont know about, since when i got mine, it came with the gears, so i wasnt going around comparing prices of gear oils.

i already had my mind made up that i was going in to get RP tranny fluid. i didn't buy anything else RP though. valvoline motor oil and RP tranny fluid is all i bought. and i never said he was correct about RP, just saying it was said in a reputable magazine and may be worth looking into.

I've got all RP. If everything lives a little longer, I feel its worth it.

I'd use Red Line if I could find it locally...

If it says it has Friction Modifier in it, it has to have it.

I still put a bottle of that stinky stuff in every time...

...as if gear lube didn't smell bad enough as it is...
