ive been told its because its been running rich. but i just read a thread saying black smoke is rich. its only noticable when im stopped and rev it a little and it puffs out a big cloud of white smoke.

big? :nonono: big isnt good.

3 colors of smoke:

blue/gray: water
white: oil
black: fuel.

Easier way is to smell it... if its a big puff and your idling, it might be your valves (or valve guides?) going out and the oil is pooling on the top of the cylinder at idle. Then when you rev it up, it gets mixed in with the fuel/air mixture and burns. it can also drip down from your cylinder walls at idle.

the 4.6 is good about idling, thats why cops, taxis, limos, and corriers use it is because it doesnt smoke as much after 30+ minutes of idling. like other cars do....

anyways, smell it... running rich and burning oil have very distinct smells. and if it doesnt smell like either of those its water which may mean a head gasket.

after you get it all fixed and you gind out what it is, replace your spark plugs and O2 sensors. :)

ha thanks makes sense though.
its not a headgasket i dont think because i heard if you check your coolant tank for oil it mean headgasket. no oil.
the smoke smells like burnt oil. My dad and i looked at it and believe its a valve guide like you suggested but arent too sure. thing is the car runs fine and ive ran the piss out of it since its happened, track and such. it does make a sudden decerlating sound and my rpm will drop a bit same with the speedo when im jsut rolling in gear. ill tap the gas and it goes away but its just weird. any thoughts?

dirty v-tak timer?

lol. im not sure... based on when it happens and how it happens i think its a valve guide too... when a head gasket goes, it usually spills coolant into the cylinder in large quantities (at least with all my experiences, which is only a hand full) and once a chevy dround out the cylinders out the car wouldnt run the gasket blew so bad...

take out your spark plugs, that will give you an inside look... look in your haynes/chilton/internet at what healthy and "bad" plugs look like.

luckily you are driving a ford  .. if its a valve guild ive heard of them running forever... (almost. lol) but if you were in a DSM, my friends VR4 got worse and worse over a 2 week period with a bad valve guide, he ended up dumping "No-Smoke" in it and selling it.

are you decelerating by down-shifting when it makes that sound? if so, stop decelerating like that. use the brakes.

or are you just rolling in gear? is the gear nutral? or 1/2/3/4/5/(6)/R?

how many miles does your car have?

I suggest getting a PCV filter, suggesting the PCV was a good idea... Check your intake tube (between the MAF and REAR pipe) if there is oil in there, I suggest getting a PCV filter for the drivers side valve cover to intake pipe side of the PCV system.

THey are $70 from steeda, $20 from Jegs.... I got the steeda one... and wish i got the jegs one... lol.

anyways, if your car has high mileage, I suggest Mobile 1 Clean 7500 10w30 (summer) 5w30 (winter). Clean 7500 is a SYNTHETIC BLEND. This means it is part synthetic motor oil (meaning synthisised from conventional oil) and conventional motor oil) The synthetic part of the formula will give you the longest oil life and best lubrication, while the conventional oil will help prevent oil from leaking into your cylinder.

The conventional oil molecules are larger than synthetic, which prevents it from getting past gaskets, seals, and rings. A good example is durring a downshift, your vacuum system cant handle the pull, so it puts excess vacuum stress on the gaskets and whatnot.

i also suggest not using additives, such as lucus oil stabilizer and whatnot. your owners manual says not to, anyways.

I throw on a PCV filter (or 2), switch oils, and maybe run upper cylinder cleaner through it (such as sea foam) see if that helps.

3 colors of smoke:

blue/gray: water
white: oil
black: fuel

THE ABOVE IS INCORRECT white = coolant/water
blue = oil
black = fuel
Just because your not getting any oil into your coolant and visa versa doesn't mean your head gasket isn't blown. the blown part could be from the coolant pasage to the cylinder. Oil in the rad , and engine oil that looks like a milk shake are all signs of a blown head gasket. Is the coolant level going down. Valve seals typically stop smoking when when the car warms up

yea, dessert is right, white smoke is burning coolant.

like he said - change your oil and check it out.

i got the Steeda PCV filter on my passenger side to throttle body PCV. I was thinking about putting a second one on the drivers side to intake pipe too... But that will come. Im looking at buying some wheels from the classified section right now, and i need to do a little maintance, and I need to relocate my battery... lol

damn that was alot to read lol hope this covers it. i changed my oil maybe 1000 miles ago and nothig changed. Looked at my sparkplugs and no oil either. and about hte decelerating question. no downshifting just letting off the gas and its a 5 speed 1/2/3/4/5/R.

its been doing this for a while smoking and stuff. I got it dynoed maybe a year ago and they said i was runing lean? my afr was at like a 13 or 14 when they said it should be around a 10 or 11? May or may not be correct but you guys know more than i do lol thanks for the quick responses btw.

dono what 430 is, but 420 is "catalyst system efficiency system below threashold (bank 1)"

so im sure 430 is bank 2. i image it would be O2 sensors? but i dono.
