The air pump sends (or pumps) compressed air into the exhaust manifold and in some cases directly to the catalytic converter. The oxygen in the pressurized air helps to burn quite a bit of any unburned hydrocarbons (fuel) and therby converts the poisonous carbon monoxide into good old carbon dioxide.

Some modulars do. The B-headed 4v have a similar system. Instead of being belt driven, its a 12 volt pump in the passenger fender.GDTrumbo said:No, the modulars do not. With the OBDII system, it's not needed..... Virtually all the air/fuel mix that goes into that little Jaguar engine is burnt.
Yea, you read right! Jaguar.

That's odd, What does a B-headed 4V engine go into? Is this a 4.6 or a 5.4? Learn something new every day!
