Here ya go:

The air pump sends (or pumps) compressed air into the exhaust manifold and in some cases directly to the catalytic converter. The oxygen in the pressurized air helps to burn quite a bit of any unburned hydrocarbons (fuel) and therby converts the poisonous carbon monoxide into good old carbon dioxide.

Most cars have a Air or as some call them "smog" pumps. I was wondering what to do with my smog pump hoses if I get an O/R X pipe...

Like the old Quad4 Oldsmobile engine, I don't think the 4.6l have an air pump. I have no tube routed to my converters.

No, the modulars do not. With the OBDII system, it's not needed..... Virtually all the air/fuel mix that goes into that little Jaguar engine is burnt.
Yea, you read right! Jaguar.

I have heard not running the smog pump to the cats can cause them to clog over time, any truth to that? Does that go for high flow cats as well?

Some modulars do. The B-headed 4v have a similar system. Instead of being belt driven, its a 12 volt pump in the passenger fender.

If there is any unburnt fuel left just before the cat, yea, I guess it could.

That's odd, What does a B-headed 4V engine go into? Is this a 4.6 or a 5.4? Learn something new every day!
