Alright so we found out that my car doesn't like 89 octane, we noticed it pings like a mother on WOT. So I upped the ante to 93 and now my car runs smooth and is quiet under the engine bay. However I have a question. Why would my car need 93? It's only got 85,XXX miles, has 3.73 gears, exhaust, am I missing something here? Did the previous owner have a tune put on it? Or might there be some work done internally?
Entertain me here I'd love to see some answers.

Could be that it has a tune or could just be carbon build up or some other reason. No engine lights?

Im not sure about 4.6's but I know bumping the timing on 5.0's will require 93

Yes...that is the case with every engine. That's what a tune does, advances timing for more power but requires higher octane fuel

Has the car done this since you got it? Or just recently?

If the factory requires you to run 93 it's because they tuned the motor that way same if the previous owner retuned it for 93. My 98 cobra has never been tuned and I put 87 in that *****. She runs fine with no hesitation.

I thought it has to do with the timing but I am not motor-guru myself. Mine also gets 2-3 mpg more on 93 then on 87 that is if I am keeping my foot out of it and monitoring gas comsumption.

Premium is cheaper due to an increase in mpg and reduced maintenance costs. I run premium in everything. That may not be the case in your state though. It depends on fuel blends of that area.

Lol, he can't just adjust timing like all of you want him to. It's not a 5 woah, therefore, no distributor to just turn and giggle at :)

well shit I didn't realize that modulars had no way to adjust timing. crap I am sorry.

Well not without a tuner at least....im saying he cant just go turn the distributor.

His best bet would be to pick up an sct tuner and put it back to an 87 octane tune if thats what he wants.

If it still pings than he knows he has other issues.
