Great, thanks for that clarification I am sure G36 appreciates it then since he brought the dist up? :)

sorry it just seems funny that we are being corrected on something we never said.

Ha Scott, most people say "Just adjust the timing" like it's some easy thing to do. 96 and up requires a tune.

Thats what I was getting at

If you do it through a tuner it sounds easier then what we would need to do. I mean you get to sit in the car and select XXX degrees right? :)

No, you have to have a tune file written, unless you have your own software. Either way, it's a pricy thing. It cost me about $800 to get my intial tune done because I had to buy a $400 tuner. To do it myself, would have cost me about $800, because I would have had to buy the tuner, and then tuning software, and then pray I didn't blow my car up. Now to tune on the dyno is only about $400, howver Justin at VMP does remote tunes for much cheaper.

There are chips and there are tuners

Chips plug onto the actual ecm

Tuners go through the obdII port

Sct makes several tuners
Livewite
Xcal3
And they even have a wireless setup with an iphone app

Sct also has a 4 position chip

I would stick with sct products ..... its getting harder to find people who don't tune on sct and you can find them on americanmuscle.com

If you mean SPECIFICALLY on your 302, that is with the distributor/timing light but they are talkin modular motors here. One of the many big differences in the two motors.

thank ttocs. not for my 95 5.0(lifting collar tips) but just to know and help out our non-post browzers with some info!!!! we had to swap out my computer and send to in to be programmed with a chip, then the computer wouldnt accept more mods, so we talked to Dave's Mustang and swapped out the 95 computer for a programmed 93 (chipped). although we can easily adjust the timing, the 95 computer will not always except the mechanical upgrades.

There's lots of videos on how to advance the timing on a 302 on youtube.

You'll need a timing light. Some of these guys can tell you how many degrees over TDC you can go without risking detonation. Will help wake up the car a lot!

There is options to advance the timing a bit without actually getting a custom tune with an SCT Xcal

Im pretty sure I had the option to advance total timing up to 4 degrees and there was the option to advance timing from 0-2k rpms 2k-4k rpms and 4-6k rpms I believe as well.

Also, the xcals come with generic 93 octane tunes which obviously already have the timing advanced.

I wouldnt waste the money on a custom tune unless you have more than bolt ons.
