am i just having a brain fart, or would it not be the rings? if it was a head gasket, it would smoke all the time right?

if it does it only when he gives it gas then the rings are going and he is getting 'blow by'

would hate to see you tear it apart and put it back with new head gaskets and still smoke.

try this, do a compression test, record the numbers. then do it again, but drop half a CAP of oil in the combustion chamber before every reading on each cylinder. if the numbers go up from the first test, you got bad rings. if they stay the same or hover around the same, bad head gasket.

over flowing the coolant could be the t-stat not opening. another thing to check. you can either buy a new one, or take yours out and throw it in some boiling water on the stove, if it opens in the water its good and you got bigger problems.

AHHHH, old school tech at it's best. sounds like some of the tips/tricks my dad used to use. I agree, TSTAT could be bad, but if he had a blown head gasket, he would not necessarily be overflowing coolant but possibly be burning it through the motor. Mike, have you checked the coolant and oil to make sure you don't have a coolant/oil milkshake?

The exact same thing was happening to my car... And it was 100% due to the piston rings being burnt and worn out.

check it out, make sure it works. if you re-install it, be sure to leap-frog the bolts. if you tighten one down, then the other, it will crack the housing.
