You can fit a carb or TBI under the stock SN95 hood.

I'm formulating my long term plans and have been considering going to TBI (holley, aces, whatever) on my 94 GT. I don't want this topic to get in the weeds so let's limit it to measuring height.

Supposedly Edelbrock Performer 3721 is 3.72" tall which is the shortest I've been able to find and the easy answer would be to just get that since nothing's shorter - in other words if anything will fit under the stock hood that's it. Air gap race manifolds are over 6" tall.

Anyone got advice on how to measure the room I have for a carb-style intake manifold under the stock hood I have now?

For future reference - here's a Weiand 8011 intake manifold with a Holley Sniper II with a 9x2" air cleaner on top.

It seems like the base of every 9" air cleaner has a ~20mm neck on it (except for one I found from Australia that would cost me $120+ to get here... ) but if I didn't have that "shaker" cover on the air cleaner there would be plenty of clearance even with the 20mm neck.

I'm going to cut down the neck so the cover doesn't touch the hood blanket.

The Weiand 8011 was one of the lowest manifolds I could find. It's out of production but I was able to find one pretty easily and clean it up like new.

May as well add for future visitors, I ended up switching to different valve covers though not because of rocker fit and not because of cosmetics - it's to make PCV work.

The old carb style manifold doesn't have a PCV fitting like the fuel injection manifold has, and while I can punch a hole in a piece of tin like anybody there isn't really room under the stock low profile stamping for the bottom side of a rubber bushing and PCV valve and baffle.
Lowest hanging fruit in this case was just a new set of valve covers with holes and baffles so I can PCV it.



Really is striking how much taller those are than the stock ones.

every SN that i have come across with a carburetor and air cleaner set up
have a cowl hood or a hole cut out for scoop
you would need to get a set of motor mounts to lower the engine

i take it that is the air cleaner you are going to run looks like it fit

It's pretty tight, I did end up taking ~18mm off the neck of the air cleaner which makes it 100% clear the hood blanket on the stock hood. Keeping the stock hood was a requirement for me, not a fan of cowl hoods. If it had been necessary there are a couple even lower profile air cleaner options and a slightly lower manifold but this seems to work. Just waiting on a few more things to finish it up; if things go well it'll be first run this weekend.

a mach1 hood with the shaker would look good
id dig up the part for shaker make your own brackets not to much to them

Here's final fitment,


You can see that it's almost exactly the same height as the strut brace, with the brace fully bolted down. I think one of those 14"x3" filters even on a drop base would not fit, it would certainly not clear the GT bar and probably wouldn't clear the aftermarket "Cobra" style bar I have.

The air cleaner assembly I have contains a 9x2" round element, and you could use a bare 9x2" round with even more clearance or one of those Edelbrock triangle shaped filters.
