1995 auto: reverse lights work not working

Asking for a friend, who has a 1995 GT with automatic transmission:

The reverse lights are not working when he switches to "R". If he moves from "R" to "P", the reverse lights switch on.

Safety neutral switch is recently replaced.

What can be wrong?

Sounds like the contacts in the switch are picking up later than intended. Was this an aftermarket switch or oem Ford replacement?

Did he try to adjust the switch, and make sure the shift linkage is adjusted?
