Hey all, changed my oil/fuel filter about 2 weeks ago and haven’t started it since. It started doing this ticking once I started it today. Its a 95 GT 5l convertible.

Sounds like a lifter or a REALLY bad exhaust leak to me, what kind of oil did you use?

I would have someone crank the engine while watching since you can’t really get that side valve cover off without pulling the upper intake, unless you put it back together to see it run without a valve cover. Bummer.

I’d have to check, I just put in what everyone recommended. It was either 5W-20 or 5W-30 I’d have to check. I also replaced the spark plugs because I don’t know when the last time they were replaced and they came out covered in carbon and they weren’t even the right plugs. They were the long iridium plugs so I’m assuming that hasn’t helped. I replaced them with Autolite 25s but I don’t know why to replace the wires with. I got a set of duralast 4852s but they weren’t even long enough. The more I do research the more sets of wires that I think would work but they are all over 60 dollars due to me being in Hawaii. I’m not a cheapskate or anything but I’d at least buy the right wire before I have to wait a week for them to get here only to find out they aren’t even right you know. Just trying to get back to stock before I start taking steps forward on modding and stuff due to the car needing to be able to run to go to shops for specific things etc.

Any plug wires off Rock Auto should do the trick. Very affordable. I use Motorcraft plugs and plug wires, and run 10-30 in my motor. At first I used 5-30, but I got a decent amount of knock on cold start. After switching to 10-30, it was gone. If you are running 5-20, I would switch to 10-30, especially considering Hawaii's climate.

Okay sounds good I’ll definitely try the 10-30. Okay I was just making sure if the wires needed to be specific. The spark plugs have been in since I got the car so I can’t say for sure. I’ll take a picture when I get home but it’s pretty much caked. The car only has 44k miles. I need the wires so I can start the car back up and I’ll be able to rule out the plugs if the noise continues. I’ll probably do what you guys said and I’ll probably take the valve cover off.

You should also get some gaskets for the intake as you will have to take the upper plenum off to get the driver side valve cover off. Considering the shape of the plugs and plug wires, it may be a good idea to do your PCV valve and screen as well. Very easy to do, and is supposed to be done at every tune up.
