One of the original things I envisioned for the car from the beginning was a quick release race type steering wheel. With the airbags blown already it seemed to be the thing to do. Due to me building this on budget I opted for an Ebay wheel and hub adaptor, the adaptor was tall enough that I can't fit a quick release on it without pushing the wheel too close to me. I also want to keep the clock spring in place for the horn and hopefully I can retain the cruise controls.

First I had to modify the hub adaptor to clear the wires going into the clock spring.

The next thing I did was 3D print a shroud/ cover to go over the clock spring and cover the gap on the column. Wrapped in carbon fiber sticker.

I installed it today, would have liked to test drive it but we got snow today and for the next few days. I think it will not be straight so will have to realign the front again. The horn button is wired and works. I'll have to design and 3D print a plate to hold the original cruise control switches.

That 3d cover is sick! Would you be willing to sell one? Have a link to the adapter and steering wheel as well?

Wow, nice save! Since your car was black, decklid was black, yet spoiler was red, I wonder if your car was a factory wing delete? There were a few made like that. Glad you save this one. These are getting rarer by the day as people gwt them and destroy them. What's next?

Thanks for the reply's. I still need to drive the car to make sure the shroud works when turning, the turn signals still cancel, ect.

At this time I'm not prepared to make and sell the covers, maybe in the future. I might just upload the print file to Thingiverse.com so anyone can print it.

Best looking steering wheel conversion yet
Thank you, really appreciated.

Thank you. The trunk lid looked like had factory mount holes, I'm thinking original spoiler was damaged and replaced with a junkyard one then painted black. I see other rough GT's for sale and think "Oh I should buy that and rebuild another one". As for what's next I have a few things left and also looks like I'm going to now have to replace the passenger side axel. The wheel wobbles on that side and maybe was the bent axel the guy I bought it from was referring too, I replaced the drivers side because the crash damage was on that side of the car.

On a side note the rear adjustable shocks from the coilover kit that I removed looks like they might fit the rear on my '69 Camaro.

Short update: My brother is town for Thanksgiving and the last time he'd actually seen the car was last year when we did the rear brakes. So I had to drive it across the snow in the yard to get to the road and take him for a ride, he was very impressed with the transformation. Also I wanted to see how the steering wheel swap was working and the ride with rear shock change.

The Steering wheel is great but off center to the left by two inches so will need to figure out what to do there. The clockspring clicks and pops when turning in tighter area's, normal on the road driving is fine. I think the hub adaptor is putting pressure on the center of the clockspring that turns.

The ride with the rear shock change is way better, firm but not banging the shock bump stops.

Here is a little something if anyone is interested. I really like the machined aluminium Bullet gas cap door but not in the budget right now but I wanted something and not the faux sticker( No offence if you have that). So I found this on ebay, it's actually for 2009-18 Dodge trucks but fits perfect, it's plastic and attaches with 3M tape.

Just taped on to see the fit. I'll be doing more with this.

Shortly after the last post I dug into the noise I was hearing from the passenger rear when driving. Lifted car up and ran it in gear, wheel was wobbling, removed wheel and seen the axle mounting surface had a wobble. So after being gone a couple of months and cold snowy spring I wrapped up putting a new axle in last week. There is still a slight wobble, I'm stumped, new axle, bearing and seal. It's less than before so just going to drive it at this point and that is what I did, first drive of the year. Damn this is a fun car!

The other issue I wanted to address was the off center steering wheel after I swapped in a aftermarket one using a cheap eBay adaptor hub that the wheel mounting holes were not centered. Been thinking about this the whole winter on how I was going to fix it. Didn't want to have car realigned after having already done that last fall. It all of sudden came to me 2 days ago after thinking of various complex ways, I just redrilled new mounting holes on the wheel clocked to the left about a 1/4" or so. Super simple and easy, fixed the problem!

I have a few more projects I'm doing to the car and will be getting new tires so I can really drive it where I want this summer.

I just wanted to pop in and say awesome build and you got some serious skills both body and mechanical. I also saved my mustang GT and I love to see cars that are neglected get back on the road in good shape. They only made so many so if you can save a Mustang do it !

Thank you Unterstutzung87, much appreciated.

On to the next project. Towards the end of last year I bought a universal harness 49" bar to use with the swap meet Jegs racing harness I got. These bars are available all over the internet at the big two sites and other businesses, look close and most are the same thing from low price to branded high price. I went for the no brand low price. Now when things say universal you know you'll have to work with it to make it fit. It took me a bunch of time trying different configurations to get it bolted in, in the end it fit they way it's supposed to. But I had to make the holes bigger on the upper bracket where the shoulder strap bolt goes through. Also had to slightly twist length wise the bracket to get the bar to line up. I bought a 7/16 20 x 2" bolt to replace the bolt down at the rocker for the strap so I could get the support bar bolted there also. I'm keeping the original seat belts also and only have a harness for the driver's seat. The other part I was fighting was the used harness leading me to figure out that they had cut the shoulder harness straps too short for me to reach back to the bar and wrap the strap around. So I'll be getting another harness and try to use the shoulder straps with the Jegs harness.

Thanks, after looking it over I'm not happy with it's location, I'll be working on this some more. As far as the bar goes it seems plenty heavy duty but I'm not trusting my life to it, that's what the factory seat belts are for. Would only be if I Autocross the car to use the harness to hold in the seat better.

Besides this car is already dangerous enough, no airbags.

Today I went out and took the harness bar apart to try and figure things out. Looks like some fabrication is going to be needed to get this to fit in the right spot.

How much was it
It was $62, I've seen the exact same bar with some brand name on it for $279 and prices every where between.

When ever I see "Universal Fit" I figure it just saves me building from scratch and I'll have to adapt and modify for my application. In the case of this bar I was hoping for a little better fit. It looks like this bar is more designed for a four door car or a car where the B pillar is closer to the side of the seat.

"Exact same" is a loose term. You sure the welds are just as good as they are on the $279 bar?

Moving on, I'll get back to the harness bar at some point.

Had a chance today to finish up this little project that I started late last fall. First I drilled out holes where the fake bolts were, I bought some stainless steel allen button bolts. Then I scuffed the chrome plastic with a 3M Scotchbrite to give it a brushed look. Sprayed the cover with a flat clear( Looks just like brushed aluminium now). Mounted it to the second fuel door I bought at the junkyard last fall, then drilled the holes all the way through. Threaded the bolts in and mounted on the car.

So for reference because it's further back in the thread this is what I bought to start with, it's just a stick on cover for a Dodge truck.

The reworked cover.

And what it looks like on the back side, the bolts do not hit with cover closed.
IMG_4559.JPG

Wow the orange peel paint really shows up good in these pics, I'll be working on that in the next few weeks.

I decided to add these side splitters, I'm not 100% sure on them yet will see as time goes on if they stay. I also have a front splitter that I made but haven't installed yet, still deciding on how to and if I want it on.
