It's been a long time! Still have my '94 GT ragtop (is in the process of getting a shift kit and 2800 stall), and we have recently bought a 2000 GT hard top for my son. Bone stock 5 speed, black, great looking car. For my son, on a limited budget, what mods can he do to the car to get it to mid 13's or better and be efficient about it. We don't want to spend money on things that don't make sense or are a waste of money. Gears are being considered-would like to go no higher than 3.73's so it has some highway. He will probably want it as a street mannered car at the same time. I am sure he will start posting under his own profile soon as he is now a proud member of the Mustang fraternity!

Gears fer sure.

I'd say exhaust, gears, some suspension mods, and some nice wheels/tires. All a teenager needs, I know. haha

EDIT: And a short throw. And a nice radio.

Well i have a 2002 gt and whats done to mine is jlt cold air, pp plenum and 75mm throttle body and bassani catback. Next i'm doing a mid pipe, not sure which one yet, then im doing my gears. Basic bolt ons are definitely the way to go. The gears you will feel the most bang for your buck kind of deal.

ok thanks for the input.
Gears do sound good, but how steep can you go with a 5 speed? 3.73 are not a problem but are 4.10s too steep for a street car?
He definately wants exhaust. Thinking borla's but they are expensive. Is there a cheaper brand that sounds similar?
How much of a gain would exhaust give?
Also the car needs tires, The car currently has 3 all season tires and one eagle f1. Should we put f1's all the way around or look for something cheaper?

How much highway driving does he do? I have 4.10s on my 95 and I love them. Some people say they're too steep for a whole lot of highway driving, but its not that bad. I love them

ahhh hell I heard just today that 430's are too much for a 4 valve cobra. Its all personal tase and what you like, there is nothing wrong with 410s, it will use a little more gas...big deal. And the couple hundred extra rpm at operating speed is no worse that the clutch drops / power shifts / and light to light speed bursts that comes with owning a mustang to begin with. So I dont want to hear crap about excessive engine wear from steep gears lol

3.73 are plenty from what ive felt and driven in other cars, but then again 4.10's pull hard. They just SUCK for highway.

Stay away from the F1's, they are a hard compound tire that will not hook up and they are ungodly expensive. if you must go w/ a top of the line tire get a KDW.
here's the build up of a past project i had
Mod list, in the order of importance:
14 flat:
JLT cold air kit
4.10's

XPipe
Mid 13's:
