hey guys so I bought a 94 gt convert and ive had it since september and fixed a lot of the stuff on it that needs fixed but now I am down to a non-working tach. It doesnt work at all. I tried running a jumper wire from the instrument cluster to the ignition coil but that was a no go. I figure the tach gets signal from the computer. What can I do to get it working? I am fine with running a new wire just need to know what to connect to.

Have you tried a different cluster in it? If it's the tach itself that's broken, it may be easier to just get another cluster on eBay and swap them out.

op you're correct in that the cluster tach doesnt read directly from the coil like externals do......have you tried pulling the cluster and seeing if the tach needle is jammed? or if when you move it does it react the same as the speedo?

Have you tried to put the cluster into test mode to see if there's something mechanically wrong with the needle, or just the input signal?

To enter the HEC Dealer test mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster SELECT/RESET button, turn the ignition switch to the RUN position, and then continue pressing the SELECT/RESET button (5 seconds) until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within 3 seconds of the odometer tESt display to begin the dealer test mode.

Depress the SELECT/RESET button to advance through the following steps until dtc is displayed. Depressing the SELECT/RESET button will display any stored continuous DTCs before proceeding to the next step. This way you can verify whether or not the cluster is receiving an input signal, and you can narrow out whether the gauge itself is bad.

(You can start the car while the cluster is in test mode and see the RPMs in the odometer window in number format.)

what rz5.0 said. you need one from a 94-95 for it to be an accurate test.

so i wanted to update the thread for others who were wondering. I got the tach working. I got the idea when I took apart the instrument cluster and messed with the needle on the tach. I spun the part the needle sticks to a little bit. When I put it back together and put the key it moved slightly from like 1200 to like 1500 rpm. I then decided since I had another cluster I would take the tach out and swap it into mine. when i did it worked just fine! its a few hundred rpm off, but its from a 96 so idk if thats it or not but glad i got it working

If the '96 cluster was from a GT then the tach face is different, 8000 RPM tach vs 7000 RPM for the 5.0's. This might also be part of the difference.

Electronically they are different.. If you try to swap it as a whole it will not work. You can re pin and might work but not sure if it all works.. Never tried repining my self..
