the alt in my ranger is starting to go out. strangly enough this is the first one I have seen that went out from the voltage going too high but when I first start it and for the first few mins it is above 15V. Could this be a simple job and just need the regulator and brushes replaced?

I rebuilt one years ago. (20+)
Pretty easy job.
The kit I got had a replacement bearing, brushes, diode pack and a tooth pick to hold the brushes back while the stater is reinstalled.
How much do rebuild kits go for now? and where are you getting it from?

I took mine to a rebuild shop after having 5 of them (from pep-boys) go out on me in a matter of 3 months. I still use the same alt today and it has been about 4 1/2 years and used in 2 stangs.

have not looked as I am not sure if it was a big deal. Toothpics?

the brushes are on a spring to maintain contact with the armature.
The toothpicks are used to hold the brushes in the socket till the alt is put back together. then you just pull them out and it's all good to go
