i just had the car painted over the winter, got it back 4-5 months ago.waxed it once and never have sealed it yet. before i do i wanted to clay it. so my question is....

1) is it ok to clay it this soon?

2) any tips on the process (what not to do's)

3) any recommended brands and types of clay bars to use?

4) is this stuff pretty abrasive on the clear?

any help greatly appreciated. thanks fellas :)

You can do some internet searches on this subject Tony and there will be LOTS and LOTS of responses with varying opinions.

From my experience I will tell you to do the following:

Yes its okay to use a claybar on your paint, are you sure you need to clay your car with a paint job that new? Did you get some deposits or contaminants in the paint such as sap or tar? If So you might be better served with some tar remover or a good wash/scrub brush.

ALWAYS keep the clay wet with lube and if you drop it chuck it in the trash. If you feel it dragging and making a scraping sound/feel STOP, youre marring up the clear, stop what youre doing and fold the clay over. Be sensible and dont use the clay that you just did your fenders/side skirts with on your hood. Start with the areas that have less contamination first so that you dont pollute the bar. I like to rip my clay into chunks to do separate areas of the vehicle, ie; wheels, hood, etc...

Clay wont really remove any clear from your car, polishing will do that.

For OTC stuff I recommend Blue Magic clay if you could find it, its got a little more bite than the usual Mothers/Meguiars stuff. I would get a spray bottle and fill it with your favorite carwash soap/water mix for lube, its just as effective.

Overall, just take it easy and try not to scratch the paint, remember to re-wax the car afterwards if you're not gonna polish after claying.

My 0.02 cents.

As mentioned clay if fine for the fresh paint since all it does it remove contaminants, if your paint has already been waxed it is more then ready

Keep the surface wet and keep reworking the clay to have a fresh surface

Take your time, it's very easy to do and preps the surface for fresh polish and wax

see my issue is that after i waxed it i noticed that the clear felt a little gritty in certain spots and did'nt seem to polish out as clean and smooth as the rest. like the front bumper, front of the hood. the trunk also all seem like the polish never took. you cant see anything but i can feel some texture when i run my mf towel across it.

Sounds like clear overspray to me Tony. Was the car color sanded/cut/buffed after paint?

+1.
The Mother's/Meguiars kit comes with detailing spray and a microfiber towel. The detailing spray is optional since you can use straight water as well. Just KEEP THE CAR WET.

aw yea, it def was cut and buffed with next to zero orange peel. it's not overspray, i think its simply contaminates across the front from long trips and nasty columbus road dirt.the trunk has always had a little grit for some reason. now that is prolly from me using spray glue in my trunk while installing the carpet and shit, but idk really...hoping calying it will allow the polish and sealant to be more productive.

The front bumper is like that because of rock chips. You just can't do anything do avoid it.

Put your hand in a ziploc bag and run it across the paint if you feel it catch on the paint then you need to clay bar it.
Did it to my car last week and damn did it need it!

Imagine if you used the polish on a DA... or used a glaze, you think it's shiny now oooh man you'd blind yourself with glaze. Looks good Tony!

I remember the first time I did clay its a funny realization. Not as funny as the first time you hear of it as I am sure we all remember thinking"rub WHAT on my car?!"
