My son's 97 GT is a Automatic. He called me from College to tell me that after the car is started he can't get the button on the shiftier to press in. If he turns the car off he can press the button on the shiftier and put the car in Neutral and then start the car and put it in drive. Any idea's what would cause this?

Isn't there a solenoid that activates when the brake is pressed to be able to pull it out of park? Maybe the connections for that are going bad.

Yes there is such a switch, have him look under the brake pedal. That switch got stuck for me. I pressed it and it worked ever since.

Thanks I will have him check. I will let you know if that’s the fix.

Well my son was home for Thanksgiving so I looked at the switch on the break pedal. I disconnected it and moved it up and down then sprayed some silicone on it. Works sometimes but not every time. Must be worn out. Now to find it’s official part name.
