axle shaft play?

so, i started ripping off all of my control arms to do install my prothane polyurethane bushings, and i discovered that my axle shafts move in and out about an 1/8th of an inch both sides. they also have a bit of slack in them when you spin them. My ujoints are also shot yippee. anyway before i rip off my axle does anyone have any input on what could cause them to move in and out like that?. thanks for the input.

idk. do our cars use the c-clips to hold the axles in the diff? i know chevy does. that's the only thing i could think of.
