So you find that part you've been looking for on Craigs or a Forum, what's your technique?

I typicaly WON'T pay more than 1/2 retail cost, so if a new one sells for $100, I won't pay more than $50 for used. Maybe some exception if parts are new or almost new, or if the part is incomplete or needs some work. But a general guideline.

When I contact the seller, I get more pics when necessary. If it's something I go out to look at, I do the research and see if they price it fair and ask when is a good time for the seller to meet and setup to see parts. When I get there I generaly try and talk car guy stuff, identify with the seller, be friendly, etc. If I want the part, I then go into bragain mode. Usualy I ask them their bottom dollar, and get part for cheaper. Works every time.

When it's an online deal, I find the part at the price I want. A little risky to try and low-ball someone, then paypal them a bunch of money. I think when you pay their asking price, they're happy with the sale and you won't get screwed by someone you've never met. I do bargain a little if I'm buying more than 1 part to get a package deal on pricing and shipping.

As a seller, I can't stand the d-bags that flat out try and low-ball you via email/text/PM. I've had a couple of these guys come by the house and try and get a part for 1/2 of what I'm asking, 'flash cash' in my face, etc. I usualy just nicely say "I have your information, and if this does not sell within a week or so, I'll contact you." They usualy don't like that and their bid goes up, and part sells.

Parts get expensive, share some of your ideas/techniques. Curious to see how you guys deal with buying used parts!

"ill send you naked pics of my gf if you give me 50% off."

-- seriously, I just give them a lower number (not insulting) usually rounding down on a $5/10 increment. "asking 125" round down to an even 100.

I never round down to something that will require change, i find it insulting when someone talks me down to $35.00 from $40.00 and asks for change. ... wtf? you had 40.00, now you want me to bust out money??

if its a fair offer, just ask "can you do any better?" if they cant, Ill usually cough up the $$.

Good techniques. My favorite is just start with a low offer they say no, you give a little better offer than they suggest another price you offer below that. Then they offer above that, then you offer your original low.ball price and they accidentally say yes. You throw the money at them and grab the parts and run. It has to be done really fast for it to work. Lol
