So you find that part you've been looking for on Craigs or a Forum, what's your technique?
I typicaly WON'T pay more than 1/2 retail cost, so if a new one sells for $100, I won't pay more than $50 for used. Maybe some exception if parts are new or almost new, or if the part is incomplete or needs some work. But a general guideline.
When I contact the seller, I get more pics when necessary. If it's something I go out to look at, I do the research and see if they price it fair and ask when is a good time for the seller to meet and setup to see parts. When I get there I generaly try and talk car guy stuff, identify with the seller, be friendly, etc. If I want the part, I then go into bragain mode. Usualy I ask them their bottom dollar, and get part for cheaper. Works every time.
When it's an online deal, I find the part at the price I want. A little risky to try and low-ball someone, then paypal them a bunch of money. I think when you pay their asking price, they're happy with the sale and you won't get screwed by someone you've never met. I do bargain a little if I'm buying more than 1 part to get a package deal on pricing and shipping.
As a seller, I can't stand the d-bags that flat out try and low-ball you via email/text/PM. I've had a couple of these guys come by the house and try and get a part for 1/2 of what I'm asking, 'flash cash' in my face, etc. I usualy just nicely say "I have your information, and if this does not sell within a week or so, I'll contact you." They usualy don't like that and their bid goes up, and part sells.
Parts get expensive, share some of your ideas/techniques. Curious to see how you guys deal with buying used parts!
