hey guys i want to relocate my battery, but mainly for the reason of cleaning up the engine bay. i dont care if its not NHRA legal, bc i have no need for it to be. I just want to lose some pounds off the front end and make the engine compartment look better.

im not looking to spend much to do this, so i was looking at the cheap universal kits from ebay. the info says they were from a local speedshop that closed down, were they were sold for 125bucks. i dont mind the fact that its NOT a nice looking aluminum box with a logo on it, its going to be in the trunk anyways...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNIVERSAL-TRUNK-MOUNT-BATTERY-RELOCATION-KIT-2-GA_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem51913c9c90QQitemZ350329019536QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

would this kit be safe? i dont want to buy a cheap kit that will make my car go up in flames. says it comes with 2gauge wire. should i just spend the money and buy a name brand one? also, anyone know any good write ups to get this done?

i had that exact same kit. it came off summit racing.

... seemed like good quality. would in no way pass spec, but you said that didnt matter.... so i would get it.

the lid has vents, which allows gases to enter into the cabin (eventually) ... i dont know the danger in that....
its a large box, so most any battery would fit.
seemed like pretty good quality wire.

id do it, but i would use an optima battery and call it good, if i were you.

alright sounds good im going to order it soon.

on a scale of 1-10 what would you rate the install? and are the cables it comes with going to be good enough?

I just did a battery install. You kind of need to know what your doing. Normally battery install is on the RIGHT REAR of the car, you'll have to drill the floor and get it mounted to that. FYI DROP THE TANK AND DONT FOR GET THE FUEL FILLER NECK.

so after the tank is down, mark your box location drill the floor and run your bolts though. Secure the box and then that's done. Next I'm assuming because you don't care, your not going to do a battery shut off switch/rod correct? If so decide where you want it, mine is out my right tail light. Onward young lad, GROUNDS GROUNDS GROUNDS find somewhere on the back side of the car where you can attach this MASSIVE ground you will need. Its got to be good clean bare metal, no near the fuel filler, or the battery if possible. Next run your positive cable though the interior of the car or exterior, how ever you want, and attach to the fuse box and then use the OE line to the starter. Simple as pie.

Oh to drop the kit you have to fuel tank straps which are a 13 mm bolt right strap unbolts on the rr and left side unbotls on the left front. also the fuel filler neck has 3 screws which are eh 7mm?? maybe 8mm ... dont forget thoese and get a jack, and slowly lower it down

the kit came pretty early today so i figured id try and mount the battery before i went to work. everything went well. the bolts for the straps were rusted like crazy. now all i have to do is the wiring and find a good spot for the ground.

are they any safety issues with running the positive cable through the interior?

i had an amp and subs back there once and the wires are still there, and i have to remove some of the interior peices to do so, so i figured while i was doing that i could just run the positive wire for the battery in the same location and have it come right out of the hole in the fire wall.

a couple words of advice, I didn't see a fuse holder with that kit? The first rule of running power wires is ALWAYS FUSE THE WIRE WITH IN 12" OF THE BATTERY! This rule is not to protect the wire, nor the battery but your car. If that 2awg wire grounds out somewhere in that wire run it will procede to weld itself to the spot of the chassis it has grounded to at least until the car catches fire and with 2 awg it will catch fire.

Be sure to route that wire through grommets so that there is no bare metal touching the wire in the hole.

Ive heard for battery relocation to be track legal you need an external shutoff, is this correct? Anything else you need?

The box has vents, a lid that is bolted down, and it is secured between to welded plates under the carpet ;)
