So I am shopping around for some gears right now and I'm not sure of what all I need. The first thing I am curious about is: Who makes the strongest and most reliable gears? I am looking to upgrade to a 3.73:1 gear ratio.

Also, Is the Rear end Girdle worth it?

What else should I get, other than a rebuild kit...I don't think I can afford axles even though I would like to...

I appreciate the input.

Ford Racing

I would rebuild the traction-loc depending on the age..

Make sure you get friction modifier..

SVO is what i have...  i havent had a problem.

i got the girdle after the gear swap.  performance difference? no... but if it claims to add reliability, hey why not? i got mine used for like $100.00 or something...

You need to buy a bearing kit (americanmuscle.com)
gears (fordracingparts.com)
lube (go to your local napa and get royal purple, if you want my .02)
and thats it...

i may be forgetting something, but i dont think so...

i also suggest a differencial magnet (www.summit.com)
and the axle girdle (www.fordracingparts.com OR http://www.macmidwest.com/Rear-End-Support-Covers-C414.aspx)

if you do change your axles i have mosers and love them.  you should also change your brake pads if you change your axles and the come with new brake rotors (local napa store)

you need:

ford racing:
CM-19546-A1 - friction additive
M-4700-B (although i think M-4700-C will also work) - clutch disc/shim kit
M-4209-F373N (3.73s) - gears
M-1225-B - axle bearings
M-4033-G1 (or get it from MAC Item #: 28800 for a lower cost) - diffy cover

jegs:
01300 (rpyal purple fluid)

americanmuscle.com
50045 (speed cal for speedo correction)

i wouldnt bother with new axles if you keep your stock diffy... personally i dont see any benifit unless you upgrade to 31 spline axles and diffy.

if you do get new axles get:

americanmuscle.com
73001 - moser 31 spline *OR* M-4235-D - FRPP 31 splines
21500 - eaton 31 spline LSD diffy. *OR* M-4204-F318(2)(3) - FRPP trak-lok diffy

depending on if you want "Deg-leg" traction-lok or "true posi" LSD.

edit: no, i dont think FRPP offers a "kit" :-(

Ford gears and rebuild kit. Unless you make lots of horsepowers, a girdle is unnecessary, and can easily be added later anyway.

1.8 quarts (roughly)

i always buy three, just to make sure i have enough... i have never once filled a diffy without spilling some...

pull off the diffy cover, drain it. then on refill put the diffy cover back on, then take out the plug (driver's side front of the axle) and put in a 3/8" fuel line hose (purchase at any auto store) and get like 6 feet of it... anyways, put it in the hole on the front of the axle and fill 'er up... you'll know its full because it will drizzle out of the hole... also, i add the friction additive first, personally...

you may need to remove the dog-bone to take off the fill-plug.
