So I was hanging out with my buddy who has a cobra the other day and we were cruizin around and he had a really nice fuzzbuster that pretty much warned him of EVERY cop we were anywhere near at all and i thought it was pretty cool...So i started looking at them at Best Buy and a couple other stores and the main brand I see alot is Cobra. Does anyone know much about these and what one would be the best for the money???

I got my Cobra for $99 at Walmart a few years ago. Never gotten a speeding ticket. On the highway it warns me of a radar atleast .5 mile before I see him. Usually it seems like over a mile though.

The best one money can buy is a Valentine One. My father has one (I think he paid $400). It has directional arrows and has a longer range than my Cobra. Not to mention a no-questions-asked lifetime gauruntee.

Cobras are frowned apon in the radar community. Stay away. I have a Beltronics radar detector and it works great. Most cobras leak there signal big time causing other detectors in other people cars to go off with false warnings.

=] If you have to... order from the internet to avoid all the store Cobra radars..

If your budget is big enough get a valentine

edit: heres a forum that im on: http://www.radardetector.net/forums/cobra/

:angry7: Cobra's :angry7: stay away

yeah well ive been reading about them on the internet for the past couple hours (nothing better to do at midnight lol) and ive learned alot, apparently cobras arnt very good like you said and the best name brands out there are Beltronics (BEL), escort, valentine, and whistler. Some Cobras are ok if you spend upwards of 200$ but theyre range/capabilities arnt as good as most other ones apparently. I also ran across this website buyradardetectors.com, very generic i know lol. But they seem to know what theyre talking about and im thinking about this whistler one they have advertised on the main page now. supposed to be almost as good as the high end 300$+ escorts and Beltronics...

the best fuzz buster to get which is free is a lighter right foot. Any radar detector only works if the cop has his radar gun ON. Many times they have the gun off and switch it on when they see you, by the time your detector beeps his radar beam has already gone back to him with your MPH. I've gotten a weird feeling before when cops are around and its been right more times then not and prob saved my ass more times then any detector would. Just this voice in my head that says...hey you should prob slow down..... and Ive often seen cops right after that..weird but I'll take it.

You need to know when you can mess around and when you cant. No one on here follows every traffic law 100% of the time we all break them but you have to know when its ok to speed and when you should be on good behavior.

+1. Its usually pretty easy to guess where a cop will be hiding out at. I've thought about buying a radar, just to keep myself in check, but I can't justify spending $100 on something so silly.

I couldnt agree with you more!!! Im not buying a radar detector so i can speed more often, Im buying one to make me more aware of cops in the area and it will probably make me speed less than i already do lol. Trust me Ive gotten lucky way too many times when it comes to speeding and if i couldve went back in time and had a nice radar detector, the chances of me speeding at that moment wouldve decreased ALOT. And the issue isnt really cops sittin by the freeway using there lazer gun or radar, there fairly easy to spot and I hardly ever speed on the expressway anyway. It will be more efficient for me when im drivin around in the city or small towns where you cant see if theres a cop driving behind you or ahead of you or around a corner because of traffic or some other reason and it will stop me from making a stupid decision...make sence??? hopefully this will help my brain make the right decision, rather than my right foot haha

Research what types of speed detection units are being used in the area you drive in. If it's still radar-only, something like a Valentine One does a great job but it's still advisable not to do more than 5mph over. We work on a lot of cop cars and there are a few benefits (PBA cards are nice) but I do get to pick their brain a bit. Most of the guys sitting in the speed traps are waiting for a 13mph+. It's easier when you pull someone over because they are clearly wrong and they know it, it's not as much drama with some crybaby story. Those leave a lot more room for talking down in court, and, the bottom line is, they are bigger $$$ tickets. Some will go for people even 6+, but it's time dependent. Big road with a lot of cars out, they'll wait on a big one. Small road late at night with only a few cars here and there, it takes less to get a ticket.

If they are using laser in your area, and most are now, fuzzbusters are completely useless. There is no way to pick them up before you're shot. The top brands like the V1 that guarantees they will pay your ticket in the fine print say radar only. Tickets are checked at the bottom what was used. And they don't pay the insurance hikes, the points, etc. that follow you for years.

Best bet is to set the cruise at 4 over. A college class mate did a speeding project for his statistics and physics majors and came to the conclusion that unless you are on a freeway with no traffic lights, light traffic, and you're on a drive of 3+ hours, you really gain just seconds by doing 15+ the speed limit versus going the speed limit. It has a lot to do with the timing of lights. You can get a half mile ahead of someone doing the speed limit over the course of ten minutes or so and one traffic light or one person driving slow in the left lane and all of a sudden they're right on your ass again, and they didn't risk a $400 ticket and 4 points the entire time.

my friend bought a Valentine when he got his m3. i think its a joke, it goes off every time he pass's a safeway or any store with auto doors. the arrow system is cheap its loud as hell and he still get tickets with it.

myself i would never buy one. waste of money. 7 years of driving and only 1 speeding ticket. there was no way around 92 ina 45. i was honest with the cop so he dropped it to 75 in a 55 saved me $200

just drive smart, dont be a douche, and if you get pulled over be nice to the cop. they in fact can help you out of a mess you made.

I love my Escort..it has saved me multiple times...I can detect radar up to 2.8 miles away, around curves too most times...one example...I used the frequently drive a back country road with a lot of straightaways...almost never saw any cops & never one sitting waiting for you...it was a 55 but safe at much higher speeds, very few crossroads. One night I just decided to up it to 80 on cruise & suddenly I got a "bogie" hit on Ka band. Immediately I dropped to 55 & 3.1 miles later I found him sitting along side the road...the Escort paid for itself right there.

Escorts get very few false alarms it is silent 90% or more unless it is real...my old Cobra was useless & extremely annoying. Now I drive slower mostly but use the Escort to keep me alert & aware of my surroundings & I play mental games on long trips to locate the cops before I could be in harms way even though I am usually no more than 5 over.

Whatever, get a quality one or drive the speed limit...won't prevent all tickets but even one is worth it. Laser is too fast your only hope is to get a bit of scatter from someone around you...no protection from instant on guns just be smart & be safe.

Not to mention many states radar detectors are illegal and you can be confiscated and fined for one. It would really suck to get hit with a ticket, have your $400 detector taken away, and receive a ticket in the mail for an additional $150. Just as the public has radar detectors, many police vehicles have equipment to detect them.

They're legal here in Ohio. The only reason I have it is for the highway when I want to go ~72. I do like knowing where they are though, they have a tendency to be "out to get me", particularly in this small town.
