hey guys I have a big oil leak. I noticed when i was going down the road the other day i was smoking quite a bit so i parked the car. I found I had oil all over the underneath of the car. I had just changed oil and the pcv valve. Which I assume was the stock one. the hose was pretty brittle on the pcv valve. I'm wondering if there is a hole in the hose would that be causing the oil leak? it seems to be coming from the rear main seal area/ and or the back of the oil pan. help me out here.

sounds like a rear main seal or oil pan gasket... :]

both are a huge pain....

if its a rear main seal i suggest having a shop install it. those are tricky and a huge pain if they fail.

after I looked underneath i couldnt see where the leak was coming from after i cleaned it up a bit but i figured the oil level probably wasnt high enough to be leaking

once you start the engine i'll start leaking again. the crank will spin and oil will by-pass the rear main, and/or it will increase crank case pressure and eventually it will bypass the oil pan gasket.

A couple of things. When you replaced the PCV did you also replace the mesh screen below it. That's important as it will plug up and if the PCV was OEM chances are it is plugged. That will result in crankcase pressure which will force oil through seals and gaskets. Second, where is the level on the dip stick? If you've overfilled the crankcase the same will happen and oil will be pushed out through seals and gaskets.

I didnt replace the screen at the time, they werent in stock, i do have one in the garage now though. is it possible if that is clogged if i change it, it will stop leaking?

Park it, start it, and see where it starts to drip.

My guess would be the drain plug(s) are leaking. I'm assuming it was not leaking before the oil change? Also check the oil filter/gasket.

it was not smoking before the oil change/pcv valve. it was leaking oil but not to the extent it is now.

Did your old oil filter have the rubber gasket on it? If not its still on there with the new filter+seal and causing a leak.
