I was fixing to go through my brakes on my 97 gt vert and and replace calipers and rotors. I was looking to see if i could do some minor upgrades without dropping 2k or more. It looks like the 99+ GT's used dual piston calipers with the same size rotors as the 97's. Will they be a direct fit to the 97 brackets? Also would it really gain any braking improvement?

why not just do the simple thing here and go to 96-98 cobra brakes? These are dual piston and should bolt right up

when you do these.. be sure to put SS lines on to get it out of the way

That is the second route i am trying to figure out. Looks like swapping to Cobra brakes would mean calipers. rotors, brackets as a minimum. I'm also trying to see if that would mean master cyl. and proportioning valve as well.

I believe the brakes are the same on the 96-04 GT's I could be wrong but I thought they were all the single piston brake calipers

in 99 they went to duel piston front brakes on both the v6 and GT cars

you dont need a new master cylinder on a 97

Looks like if I do the Cobra swap even though I have the 17 inch rimes I may have to get a new spare? How can I tell if the existing GT spare i have will clear the Cobra brakes. I'm not sure since I have the optional 17 inch rimes if I have the larger spare.

If your spare does not clear the Cobra brakes, you can always put in on the back wheel, and put the wheel that you know clears it on the front. You can always do the 99+ setup as well. You're not going to notice much brake difference to be honest, but they are lighter, which does add up at the end of the day.

I'm honestly weary of driving around any non-cobra mustang on the road lol. The stock brakes for the sn95 as well as new edge are by far sub-performing of what they should be. I feel that the stock brakes should have been the cobra brakes because they at least stop the car.

Not really a option when the wife and daughter are driving it.

Any one got a cobra spare that can take a measurement so I can compare?

Cobra spare tires are larger 17" spares. if you dont have a Cobra, Bullitt, or Mach 1, then you dont have a 17" spare

standard spare tires wont fit over the Cobra brakes. if they did, Ford wouldnt have made the 17" spare

That would make sense except for the fact that this car came from the factory with 17 inch rims. Maybe that option included the larger spare.

At least now you've confirmed the GT's came with a 15, I can check to make sure it is a 15 inch rim vs larger.
