I'm toying with the idea of buying a set of Comp Cam "102300" cams but want to get some opinions before I do something stupid. First off, does anyone know if these can be run withOUT getting a tune as well? Also, many descriptions of these cams state to run a 2000 stall as well as 3.55-3.73 gear. I have the gear, but not the stall; will this cause issues? Lastly, what kind of gains should these cams yeild (without a tune, if possible) considering my other mods (or lack thereof)? Basically, would you say this purchase is a bad idea or a good one?

Thanks in advance, and here is the cam info just FYI:

I can tell you that any aftermarket cam will require a tune of some sort. Will it run? Yes, but not to its full potential. You may have to dick with the idle to keep it from dying, but I would reccomend a tune.

Yah, I'm fully aware that a tune is suggested to see the full potential. I think that can be said for pretty much any modification. What I'm more interested in though is whether it's worth the purchase without a tune because I'm really not willing to pay the $800 for a tuner and dyno time. If the cams wont run (and yield decent gains) without a tune, than I wont bother buying them. The same can be said for the stall converter. If I need an aftermarket stall to run these cams, again I wont bother buying them.

with the 274/278 cams, you going to need more than cams man. for those cams, a tune will be needed, not wanted. the car is going to idle like crap without it. and im not talking about lopey-ness, im talking it will die everytime you move that shifter in your auto.

and with the stock stall in there, when you stop at a light or anything, it will want to 'jump', like you'll have to be full on the brakes to hold it back. and its not fun.

i say if you cant afford the supporting mods, save until you can. if you want something you can run without a tune, buy Hitech Stg. 2' or comp 262's. most times you can even stick them in straight up without degree'ing (which would be another thing needed with the 278's), and run fine. e

I absolutely agree with you man, thanks for the input. I was just thinkin that since the cams were a decent price I'd consider 'em. Looks like I'll save the cash for now. :) Thanks again.
