hey guys, i was just hoping someone would be able to give me some information on general engine stuffs. recently i've been considering doing a pi swap and eventually running a vortech or procharger rather than using an m90 system. when you put a different cam in, what exactly does that do? thank you for any responses, and for tolerating my uneducatedness about cars :)

here's one of the better videos i found......the cam is the shaft that runs thru the middle connected to the 16 thin rods (push rods).....those push up the rocker arm and the rocker arm pushes open the valves.....different cams have different lobe lifts and different valve opening durations which causes the engine to run differently.....if you get to the point of getting a cam just remember its much more important to run a cam that improves your engines performance rather than just getting a big cam simply for the idle like way too many people do

also that video is a standard single cam v8.....not a modular....but i figured it'd be easier to learn the basics first before you start learning about this fancy overhead sheit

quite frankly the best route is to buy a GT. not trying to be a dick, just realistic. the work involved in the swap for the uneducated is going to be costly and very difficult.

Thanks for the input. I've considered it, but I don't even know how much money I'd be able to get for my car. That and I wouldn't want to sell it in case my parents took that as an insult

The camshaft(s) open the valves to allow air/fuel in and exhaust out.

In your case the v6 has pushrods. The camshaft pushes the pushrods which push a rocker arm (kind of like a teeter totter) which pushes open the valve.

On ohc (overhead cams) the cam pushes directly on the teeter totter (called a valve follower) which pushes open the valve.

You can not put pi heads on your car because it is a pushrod motor. Also it is a v8 on a v6 block. You may be able to put the dual port heads from the 99-04 v6 tho....

If you look in my thread "knock knock........" in the 4v section you can see how the 04 cobra camshafts push on the followers which open the valves....
