Code is P1443 EVAP canister valve mechanical fault or VMV fault.

ECM detected a fuel tank pressure charge greater than a minus 7 inches of H20 in 30 seconds with a purge less than 0.02lbs per minute.

How bad is this? Can it cause collateral damage to the emissions system or fuel system?

I don't know that it would be real serious in the short run but you should check your IAC by letting the car idle and shake and bend the IAC valve wiring harness and connector. Sudden increase in engine speed indicates a fault. Also check the EVAP system vacuum hose between fuel tank and the carbon canister for faults. Might also want to check your purge flow sensor and CANP solenoid (for vacuum leak).

Car runs fine. No surge, no miss at idle, no loss of power, just the CEL is on. I am going to have the code cleared and see if it becomes active or is still active.

It fixed itself... I try to never clear the codes. Once the problem is solved and you put some miles on it, the light should go off on it's own.

It might have been your purge solenoid stuck for a bit.
