215HP aint enough anymore. Duh I got a super deal on an exploder 5.0 so I'm using the heads and intake.

I pulled off the intake and began minor porting and polishing the guts of it.

I made each runner about 1/8" larger and smoothed out the casting roughness on the inside.
note: it's hard for the camera to pick up the smoothness in the runners.

Now for some outside beautification
I liked the look of the cast alumnium but there are numerous casting marks and flash that's butt ugly.
AS an experiment I ground off some of those marks on the bottom of the intake.

and used by spot sand blaster to "roughen" the look to match the stock look

pretty close.

now to make it look stock

At this point the intake is pretty close to being done. I might work on it more if I can find some media to make the outside rougher and more like stock.
This is most of the alumnium renoved from the intake

Now it's onto the heads. I poped those suckas off and found this inside of the cylinders.

Cross hatching.
Port and polish pics of the heads to come.

I hate cleaning up after those type of head gaskets.

What is that bracket looking thing above the cyliders in the pic?

It will definitely be noticeable. You doing a cam too? If not, see if you can find a set of 1.7RR, aftermarket or a 5.0 Cobra.

And make sure you don't use the Explorer valve springs. Upgrade them with TFS or OEM Cobras at least.

I already have a spring kit and the adapter elbow. Thinking about RR's too. I'm getting a little overtime in my ck currently so I might be able to squeeze some $ from the wifey.
I'm still undecided about the cam, it's between steeda 19, FRPP E cam, and the TFS stage 1. the Mustang gets its butt sniffed yearly so I need to get something that's runs clean.
parts

I'm also going to try to run my BBK shorties.

My Fox BBK shortys work fine, but you'll probably need 90* boots and some sort of heat shield/material around #7. Not sure if there is a difference between the Fox and SN BBKs other tan the emissions port. Also, while the heads are out/off test fit the headers, then try and install spark plugs. That will tell you how close the headers are with plugs. Get plugs for a Cobra as well, they are deeper than E7 plugs.

Can't think of anything else ...

I love how you're grinding down all the ridges and brackets that you don't like.
It's gonna look really clean once youre done.

Not to mention it'll feel like a whole new car.

That was after I backed the timing down to 10. At 14* BTDC It made best of 272/305. That's with an e-303, u/d pulleys, and 1.7RR.

It is a fresh motor, but zero portwork.

nice work so far. You plan to dyno it afterwards? FWIW my 94 cobra has the p head (yes p heads, no orig cobra motor), 1.7's, and tfs 1 cam. Runs pretty good. I might get it on the dyno on the 15th.
